Summary

Mitt Romney acknowledged that Trump’s MAGA agenda now fully dominates the Republican Party, stating in a CNN interview that traditional conservatism has been overtaken.

Romney, a frequent Trump critic, admitted he was wrong about Trump losing in 2024 and predicted MAGA’s influence would extend into 2028 with figures like JD Vance.

Romney argued the GOP’s appeal to working-class voters has shifted the political landscape, while criticizing Democrats for focusing on cultural issues over economic concerns.

He claims this focus cost Democrats key demographics in the recent election.

while criticizing Democrats for focusing on cultural issues over economic concerns.

They’re already coming out of the woodwork online to claim Trump never promised to bring down grocery prices. It was never about economic issues. They will say whatever to justify taking power. Romney can eat shit for enabling them.

When I am weaker than you, I ask you for freedom because that is according to your principles; when I am stronger than you, I take away your freedom because that is according to my principles.

It was about economic issues for many voters. They wanted to believe a lie more than the hard truth.

GOP’s appeal to working-class voters

has absolutely nothing to do with gop policies (or lack of) that would strengthen the working and middle class…

Exactly. I read that and scoffed, asking “what have they done to appeal to them other than talk big… Oh…”

What’s weird is that most Democratic politicians aren’t really hitting the identity politics thing, either! That’s mostly coming from culture and from Hollywood.

If anything, it’s the rabid right wing that constantly harps on bathroom bills and trans women in sports as if that affects most people anyway…

Right. Romney is stuck in the past with his criticisms. It’s the right that needs these talking points to be true all the time, and they force it even when it’s just them talking about it. Democrats do need to do differently, but not like how Romney is calling it. It’s just so disgusting.

What has anyone done for them? Any vote cast ended with society becoming worse for normal people in the end, so now they are trying more extreme measures, and they will continue if things don’t get better.

It’s how the cycle works.

Traditional non-maga conservatives can still work with democrats to meet some of their goals for their constituents. It’s not like they’re prevented from working together.

If they do that they’ll get primaried and lose their seats. Until he dies Trump owns the GOP and to go against him is suicide. When he does die the party will probably collapse because it will lose all meaning.

In general yes; but Romney is probably one of only a handful of GOP politicians who could work with the Dems and not get primaried out.

It’s around this time Bernie Sanders and the progressives within the Democrats starts cannibalizing the old guard too, because new blood is needed to fight for the future - and Nancy Pelosi & Co is not out, chief.

Establishment democrats need to get got.

The Republicans eventually embraced their populist wing, because they’ve accepted that’s their best chance to win elections. The Democrats, on the other hand, have been very reluctant to embrace their populist wing, because they view populism as dangerous and a threat to democracy. They think that because that’s what the scholars and academics say, and Democrats try to be very technocratic.

TBF, what the qons have embraced is all faux populism.

You’re right, I shouldn’t say they’ve embraced their populist wing, I should say they’ve captured it, or harnessed it. Trump doesn’t necessarily care about any of those populist ideas, he just knows that saying he cares about them helps him win elections.
