I mean back when duolingo has discussions or what they called it, you might write nasty stuff. But now, imagine being banned for the wrong translation.
I haven’t used duolingo for a few weeks because my hack to have infinite hearts broke again and I’m too lazy to put in the effort even tho it’s not that difficult actually
I’m gonna be real, Duolingo is literally only good for motivation and easy vocab review. It has been years since I used it, but the best advice I got on that website was when forums still existed and people told me that the translations for JP were shit and to learn somewhere else, which is probs why those forums got deleted.
If you have to use hacks to not be bored/deal with the bullshit, then just leave man. It’s not worth the bird begging you to come back. Find stuff online, YT (unfortunately) is your friend for resources.

I’m so glad I left completely (minus the random search result with no other leads, but no browsing) when the API fuckery started, corporate social media sounds like an absolute hellscape now.

Not op but I got perma banned for fighting with people who were defending massive pedophile Dr disrespect. They were arguing that “it was legal that means it’s okay”. I pointed out that the US is fucked and certain states have consent laws at 16. Legally he could fuck a 16 year old. However that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a pedophile scumbag regardless of legality.
I was then banned for “child sexual content” :)
I got banned for commenting on a video of something like “guy loses it in van and runs down protestors” my comment was pointing out that they were running into the way of an already (slow) moving van and then leaping dramatically to the ground. It was like a grade school production of a Chinese insurance scam en masse.
I tend to think that 16yo is fine so idc, they do their things

This is like the defining case of “just because it’s legal doesn’t make it okay.” An 18 year old and a 16 year old is one thing. It’s very different when it’s a 30-something year old and a 16 year old. That’s like a high school senior trying to get with a 12 year old.
There’s a massive power imbalance in a relationship like that where the 30-something has basically total control. Even a 30-something with a college kid has issues imo, let alone a kid who’s a sophomore or junior in high school. That’s some Quamire from Family Guy shit. “I love high school girls. I get older, they stay the same age.”
Half your age plus seven is the rule of thumb that I’ve heard. At 18, that means the lowest you should be dating is 16. At 32, it’s 23. Etc.
Also, echo chambers are good, actually, and you can’t change my mind. Life isn’t supposed to be a constant argument, and the criticism of surrounding yourself with people who generally agree with you is a tactic that’s been used to prevent people from simply cutting toxicity out on social media platforms.

Well the sentence that initially got me a three day ban was “Hitler did nothing wrong” which I’m aware doesn’t look good on paper but it was a quote and not my own words. According to Reddit the decision was automated so I appealed what I thought was an honest mistake and that’s when they probably saw my recent posts promoting Lemmy and talking about Palestine and decided to ban me permanently. That or they didn’t like that I filed an appeal. I haven’t used Reddit nearly as much since getting on Lemmy anyway so this is more funny than annoying but still a weird way to go.
Having gone cold turkey and just left, it’s weird no matter how you leave. Realizing how addicted I was, was kind of hard for my psyche.
It’s next to impossible to go back anyways, people are getting banned eventually. I’ve been seeing reports of people’s 5+years acc getting shadow banned for very little reason it doesn’t make sense. A comment removal, low karma, cqs scores, age is enough to trigger a full site wide shadowban. I’ve been hearing also temp bans turned into permanent almost as fast the temp ban ends

Not OP but I got banned on reddit atleast 4 times. Zero bans on Lemmy though.
All for supposed harassment usually after having a disagreement in certain subreddits. Honestly could be anything their report system seems easy to abuse
Now, I don’t tend to have those on Lemmy nearly as much, but when the pedophile I was disagreeing with reported me here the mods were chill to hear my side after issuing me a warning.
For both the more chill atmosphere and the better mods I like more here.

On bans I did mean sitewide as I know atleast veganhomecooks banned me (no clue why though I never interacted there. Just lurked). Fully understandable to think I meant communities with how I phrased it though lol.
