There’s a fundamental disconnect between people who live in highly developed nations and their awareness of how much populations from intentionally underdeveloped nations are subsidizing their ability to accrue material wealth. I believe this creates a scenario where the only way to continue maintaining the high living standards the West has known for 50+ years without incurring increasing costs is through the manipulative create of underclasses that allow capital accumulation to occur. Unfortunately now that globalization is out of fashion, many governments are shifting to bringing these underclasses much closer to home, which is adding to the resulting anti-immigrant, xenophobic political discourse we’re now seeing. Population growth could mostly be a flash in the pan, but if countries really do start shutting the door on immigration and have to also contend with collapsing fertility rates you can bet they’re gonna start rationalizing how to strip women’s rights away; have to keep the underclass there to feed the billionaires and scare the workers.
Classic authoritarian tactics:
Target a marginalized group with an issue that you’ve framed as ridiculous or politically suicidal to disagree with, get public opinion riled up by manipulating their grievances through exploiting their internal prejudices, and make everything an extension of preserving national security. Once you’ve manipulated enough people into giving you extralegal power, simply expand the circle of ‘national security threats’.
In just a few months we’ve watched Trump:
steal the power of the purse and the power to enact tariffs from Congress,
create a precedent for the unconstitutional arrest, detainment, and removal of legal residents and dissenting citizens,
iterate his intentions to restart American expansionism into Canada and Greenland,
Successfully twist the arm of media companies, law firms, and universities into doing his bidding,
And his other executive order directs Dept. Of Homeland Security, DoJ, and DoD to create a plan for implementation of military and national security assets to “prevent crime and protect public safety”.

Color me surprised that the Democrats have as much blame for our current situation as the Republicans. Nobody, NOBODY, wanted to return to normal; they wanted real change and the best they got was state-sponsored financing for tech companies and unequal economic policies
Beyond the thinly veiled xenophobia and eurocentrism, I find it actually ironic how many of you people spout this line of thinking since it shows your complete lack of mental capacity to engage with the reality that many of the people who flee do so as a result of Western involvement in other countries’ governments, and the rest are fighting a system that chooses racism and violence toward the poor over, and over, and over, and over…
tl;Dr: keep shitting on the Global South but don’t be surprised when you’re alone while Putin and Trump come for your children and your children’s children.
Man you’re really doing a lot of work to support rich oligarchs who could give fuck all about you. America has never been anything but an empire. Sure; they impose their will through softer means like foreign aid tied to a in implicit expectation of allowing American corporations to consolidate a country’s resources and labor, but an empire nonetheless. I suggest going to a library sometime. Also, wishing for the suffering of people who celebrate your pain and see you as less than is not a crime
