We managed to train ours to say “Oh my goodness!” in the appropriate contexts. Very cute 3 year old.

Most kids repeat swears to get a reaction.

My wife and I swore like sailors and just told the kiddo which words she shouldn’t repeat because they would upset other people, and that saying them at home would make it easier to slip up outside the home. We could do it because we had more practice.

It actually worked until middle school.

Same! I feel like the kids also observed/absorbed my behavior in social situations and understood that I behave differently in different situations

edit: I’m also one who laughs his ass off when kids swear. It’s so great

The best is when they do it in the appropriate situations too! Like an 8 year old throwing a ball and it bounces unexpectedly into a puddle and they let out a little “Well, shit.” in disappointment is the best.

What happened at and after middle school? 😅

Other kids started cursing regularly, and it became more socially cool. Same age as when I was a kid.

Me, explaining to the social special education evaluators about the words my then three year old could say and use correctly: he’ll say “oh shit” in the right context

Them: both laughing We can’t put that down officially, but it’s impressive that he uses it correctly

Yes, most toddlers will repeat it to parrot it back and then keep doing it because any reaction from the adults is a good reaction.

My toddler absorbed “goddammit”, and used it correctly! Was reaching for a toy on a high(ish) table, fell, knocked toys over, and landed in a heap. I hear, “goddammit” from behind me, and feel my wife stating daggers at me! Fun times.

It really makes me happy to hear that there are fathers that care. I did not get the chance to experience this.

I’m sorry to hear that. That’s far too common of a story, and I hope we can collectively do better for the next generation.
