I live in a rural area, and my various vocations often required me to be out and about in the wee hours.

Guaranteed that if another vehicle on the road was PoPo, I’m getting pulled over and screened.
First question, always, “What are you doing out here at this hour?”

It’s happened at least a dozen times in the past 20 years. The last 4 times I pulled over before they even bothered to light up. Had all the paperwork ready before they even stopped.

Being that prepared makes you even more suspicious. What are you hiding? Please step out of the vehicle.

Quit being black please. Also don’t drive a stereotypically black vehicle or a white folk vehicle either. Both are suspicious…

I’d be pretty wary of a nest of dogs driving around at 2am too.

For anyone getting ideas, don’t ever reach for the glove compartment or under your seat while the cop is walking up to you. They might assume you’re reaching for a gun. Just turn on your dome lights and let them ask your for your paperwork.

File a complaint, there’s a good chance those stops are illegal, depending on where you live, of course.

Me while driving home at night: What the fuck are you all doing out here? Go home!

And the classic “it’s 3am, on a countryside backroad intersection. Surely nobody…”
But yesbody! There it is, a car coming at full speed, exactly at the moment I’m about to engage on what should otherwise be an empty road.

Indeed. It was thirty years ago but I vividly remember the intersection and seeing the lights from my right and being like “well, fuck me! What’s this asshole doing on the road at this hour?”

I hate to admit it, but that’s me. Speeding down country backroads late at night is some of the most fun I’ve had, especially in my area where they’re really hilly and twisty.

I like to joke about how only the weirdos are at Wal-Mart after midnight (while there at 2 am buying “emergency” beer or something like that, of course)

Walmart works after midnight? If shops here were open this late I’d probably do all my shopping at 2am

Most of the 24 hour Walmarts and similar stores in my area stopped doing that during COVID, and then never did again. Most close at 10 or 11. I miss going into Meijer at 3am and getting… Whatever I wanted 🤷‍♂️

You’d think they’d want less people in the store at the same time so why reduce the hours for Covid?

Yeah I was going to say I don’t know of any 24-hour shops anymore. It’s a shame too because I don’t understand how people who work night shifts are supposed to get anything done anymore it’s not like you can order online for delivery at 4:00 a.m.

I used to do this when I lived near a 24 hour grocery store. Good times.

Same. But then I had kids, and shopping at 2AM doesn’t work well when kids get up at 6-7am…
