Truly a pretty terrible place for any kind of social activity.

People here are super self righteous and unwavering in their beliefs, quick to insult others and be generally bitchy, pedantic and quick to dogpile. Worst of all while still usually slightly wrong about a thing, but unwilling to hear it.

It’s basically the worst parts of reddit users where we have boiled it down to the most affluent or socially insecure.

Even if it’s as simple as a question people jump to defend their position with insults rather than answer it cause they get worried the person might be confused and it’s best to just make sure it’s a closed community as quick as possible.

This isn’t an open community it’s a private gated one where everyone jumped the fence and is scared that the wrong person might have come in with them.

Condescending is not welcoming.
Upvoting cause they are your in group isn’t community.
Berating outcasts cause you at least don’t feel like them is still bullying.

Nah I love the movies community. I was able to talk about the weirdest thing I’ve seen all year Megalopolis over there. Literally just wrote a comment about it.

Rough day elsewhere on the platform. Rough month really.

But thank you maybe I will check it out!

I see your instance is federated with both Hexbear and Lemmygrad. Going to gesture vaguely at that being the root of your problem (or at least > 90% of it).

Blocking instances helps, but you’ll still see users from there in the comments and in other communities (not on the blocked instance). Some UIs will hide users from blocked instances. I know Tesseract does (I wrote it to do that), but others might as well.

My experience here has been pretty great after getting my blocklist and feed curated.

Yeah I am also federated with lemmy.world and blocking that would silence the feed a whole lots more while being just as helpful to my psyche.
The commies are at least consistent and up to date on things. Which is insane since they insist on a economic system from 200 years ago.

I think the problem I have is that those outside of grad and hexbear also think their shit doesn’t stink but I literally have seen people openly mocking a user for nothing because he made a comment elsewhere that means they keep going after him to punish him for his opinion on anything. It’s cruel and fucking inhuman. It lacks all empathy and it’s not hexbear that was doing it.

I also don’t want to block people just for existing with other opinions. I couldnt do it in real life. I can choose to not interact.
Blocking feels like a bandaid for having a terrible community where everyone wants to be alone and right.

Hahahahahahaha ohhhh… Yeah like that does anything. I’ve seen mods joke about it just being the person they all gang up on as if it was the thing to do.
I’ve had some good interactions with mods, but that… Was 1 person actually. Same mod basically.

The mods are a lot of the same people and someone from “outside” telling them they are horrified just brands you as another target for them to ignore as you get silenced out. The big communities are absolutely the worst offenders.

Am a mod of a few smaller communities but I think I speak for a lot of us. We aren’t in every thread, but if you see rule breaking, report it. That’s what we’re there for. I know that sort of behavior is against the rules in my subs.

Yeah I think I’ve realized I’m really only seeing the basic big theads on lemmy.world and the moderation there is kill or be killed and whatever the mods giggle at is allowed. Which means they let dogpiling happen if it seems deserved.

I’m apparently in a rather small instance.

blocking the .ml instances helps, a lot. I made the recent mistake (twice!) commenting on Lemmy.ml. over there, anything NOT praising Russia, NK, or China is hated. they’re pretty smooth-brained and not worth arguing with. same with lemmygrad, same with hexbear. I’m fairly new to federation, and that was a big learning curve for me. a lot of the Europe or US based instances are way more open to hearing opinions and conversation, so I’d start there.

I’m not honestly fighting with .ml people. The people the most rude to me are .world.

I think they are just used as easy scapegoats cause they tend to be loud and passionate.

I can be in a memes thread and still have people argue in bad faith and call me a troll for asking a question about Linux. That’s not .ml or hexbear.

The people the most rude to me are .world.

It’s also a third of the whole userbase, so definitely a higher number of every type of users, including toxic ones.

Oh dang… Well that somewhat explains the prevalence of their users.
Kinda a problem though that they then still blame other communities when they are Lemmy to a large degree.

There is indeed a LOT of bitchy pedantry on here. I’m not sure it’s worse than other platforms, because this is the only one I’ve been using for a while now. I block very aggressively and that seems to help.

Sorry you’re not having fun on Lemmy, I do get it. For some reason reddit keeps failing upwards and we’re not getting the influx of users I was hoping for. I’m still hanging in here but participating less and less.

For some reason reddit keeps failing upwards and we’re not getting the influx of users I was hoping for.

Inertia is directly related to how big their userbase is. And they pretty much killed all the text-based discussion forums.

So I’m not hopeful we’ll get another influx that soon. People staying on Reddit will prefer to fix their personal API key every day to use a 2 years old Lemmy or Sync apk rather than try Lemmy.

Hahaha yeah the whole API key thing was what pushed me to Lemmy.

The first time I got “you have used the maximum amount of posts blah blah blah” I was done with reddit… But then I found out that I’m having a lot less fun.

I have to participate in the big communities and with awful people if I don’t want to be alone in an empty community.

Are you familiar with !newcommunities@lemmy.world ?

Also, you being on lemy.lol and its 103 monthly active users means you might miss on some communities as nobody from your instance subscribed to them to bring them to the All feed

I’m also starting to think social media plus human nature = inherently bad combo. It’s not always bad, but it trends that way over time and at large scales.

Real identity social media is bad because creepy corporations track your every move and people post fake and highly curated profiles.

Anonymous social media is bad because too many people behave like unfiltered belligerent asholes.

People suck. Basically always hoping there is someone beneath them to feel better for treating them worse.

It’s probably best to be in a situation where you can still get socked in the mouth for acting like a jerk while people are having a conversation.

Honestly Facebook is even better just cause it’s people putting on the clown makeup to get a ride from you. Apparently they pay pretty well for those stupid community posts if you get enough attention.

It doesn’t feel as self righteous at least is my point. People here deeply assume themselves smarter than anyone else here.

I saw people dogpile a comment cause the first person in a chain misread it and assumed correctly and every comment trying to pull people out of the spiral was downvoted and shouted at for being wrong as they tore each other apart.

It’s like chickens seeing another chicken bleeding. They don’t even think before they tear their kin to shreds.

For whatever it’s worth, I’ve had some very positive interactions on here, too. And I’ve seen questions answered when people needed help. And generally useful info types of posts. The comics and memes are often good (if you like those, those are not everyone’s cup of tea). Anyway, it’s not all jackasses all the time on Lemmy.

It’s not worth nothing. I just wish I figured out how to get it not to be the majority without having to silence the spaces where people are.

Violent agreement

had an account on another server banned for saying this.

Everyone here is very disagreeable. .

.world is by far the worst for ignorant shitheads.

I’m not excluding myself , but I put opinions from a different perspective and just get slaughtered.

I have probably an account on all of the top 20 instances. The main 4 I use at the moments are in my bio. The rest I use when I want to start a new community and federate it to the top instances

Edit: got your question due to context: I never got banned, which seems to be the case for the commenter above.

Everyone feels apparently a deep seated need to be right and defend their idea of the world as if we might steal away their fantasy and make them miserable for it.

If they have an opinion on it than they are already right and anyone coming in to talk to them about it is a dangerous outsider.

Everyone is xenophobic and everyone is the other. Maybe it’s not just here but man is it pretty bad here and on .world.

The most vocal use this place for escapism and don’t want reality to barge into a place they designated as “safe” because it will mean their ideas and desires won’t have a place to tolerate or even promote them.

It is partly this type of disconnection and despair that drives their aggression.

I clash a lot with all the terrorist simps & dictator loving Tankies, which certainly turns into idiotic arguments most of the time, but I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get banned from a server, which really makes me wonder what those “opinions from a different perspective” are. I’m guessing Trumpanzee’s and other far right goons will have an especially hard time on here.

pious centrism, where you are unable to stop yourself from casually slurring the political left and political right wont get you banned in your heroic clashes, but it does mean you come across as a bit of a twat.

In fact, my perspective is that I’m quite old and in not America, which is by no means unique but it does make me an outlier to the demographic. Hope that clears things up

Unpopular Opinion

!unpopularopinion@lemmy.world

Create post

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it’s something that’s widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)
  • If your post is a “General” unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let’s make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others’ opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn’t need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
