They see nothing wrong with it, because money.

It’s an old, old story.

It’s hard to block all shipments, but those that come through get purchased with a heavy markup. I didn’t heard of these companies, but in consumer electronics I can still buy a lot of stuff from companies that aren’t working in Russia, but it would not only cost me an arm and a leg since ruble is a rubble right now, it would also mean additional costs from gray importers like in this article and our store chains compensating their losses by putting them onto consumers. A lot of money go to the middlemen and corruptioners, supporting their practices, so it’s probably not bad I guess.

Oh look. Another one.

Lemmy has such a big problem with tankies.

I don’t understand why, before I left reddit a few months ago I had never heard of a tankie and now I hear it all the time.

My guess is that there are two main factors.

Part of it may be that “tankie” comes from UK political discourse (originally used as an insult from members of the UK Communist Party who wanted to distance themselves from their crazier members who defended the Soviet Union using tanks against civilians to squash anti-soviet demonstrations).

Since then the term has evolved to mean any westerner that acts as a mouthpiece or apologist for the likes of Russia/China.

It’s possible that what with Russia’s actions as of late, more of the world is being exposed to the term.

The other factor, and one that impacts Lemmy in particular, is that there is a massive tankie presence on Lemmy. In fact the original Lemmy developers were tankies, and lemmy.ml (marxists-lenninist) was their preferred instance. Hexbear is another massive tankie instance.

Yup, tons of shills and Kremlin information on here. I’ve never told a soul I use it because of that, and no doubt many thousands have visited, seen it, and just left instead of helping it grow.

Not shocking, the combined budget for addressing malicious propaganda and disinformation, from all instances in the entire fediverse, is exactly $0.00

Sounds like you’ve got a bone to pick to me. Sanctioning Russia is all the rage these days; it’s not like they’re the only ones doing it. I’d even go a step further and say everyone should be sanctioning Russia. The fact that the US also sanctions Russia is a good thing.

including getting Russia to prioritize humanity over self defense

Self defense? They’re invading another country. Again. Terrorizing civilians. That’s the opposite of self defense. There was no threat.

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They’re cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don’t show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.
