Canada’s government on Monday announced it is imposing a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles that matches U.S. tariffs and follows similar plans announced by the European Commission.
I mean it probably a horrible idea to have a bunch of cars running Chinese software in our country. Their prices are artificially low because of terrible labor standards. But we need to do something to bring the price of EVs down.
The subsides are for getting an industry off the ground before it becomes competitive against traditional technology. EVs aren’t there yet because of inherent limitations to how our metropolitan areas are organized. Hybrids seem to be the best bet, until there’s a high voltage (1kv?) charger that doesn’t destroy the battery. Otherwise, society should investigate alternative fuel distribution.
Don’t we already have pretty strict safety standards for vehicles? I can’t imagine these Chinese vehicles meet all the safety and testing requirements for the price they’re sold for.
I would buy a cheap Chinese EV. I’m not paying $45,000 for one.
What auto industry is Canada protecting? I doubt they think China is subsidizing their EVs to half the cost otherwise.
I would assume they do believe the cars are subsidized or otherwise unfairly priced. But I wouldn’t rule out pressure from US diplomacy encouraged by donations from the American auto industry.
You should rule out donations, Canada’s federal donation rules are pretty strict.

So because they are better at capitalism you cry foul?
I was going to buy one of these now it’s not worth it.
Isn’t that explicitly why we manufacture so many of our things there? Isn’t that where most iPhones are still made? What’s the difference here?
