We are the richest country in the history of the world and we have loads of empty space. We could double our population and still be fine.

There’s days to alleviate the pressures that are pushing these people North. Like but funding right wing death squads or not putting sanctions on countries that elect the ‘wrong leader’.

First, what’s the economic cost here? Immigration is not a net negative overall. Why spend trillions of dollars burning money to police one of the worlds largest borders other than to blow all of society’s resources on an impossibly stupid and unproductive task?

The irrational desire to punish children for misdemeanor crimes of parents should be seen as what it is: a mental disorder.

Yes, yes they should. Immigration is a boogeyman used to blame other people for issues that aren’t their fault.

It seems clear to me that it’s both and the cruelty is the point. Remember this lady?

“I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this,” Minton told Mazzei. “I thought he was going to do good things. He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.”

You know what? The republicans are right; immigrants should leave. How about we start with white republican immigrants (or descendants thereof) of European ancestry, then we’ll reevaluate.

Sometimes I look at the US and think how crazy conservative some of this stuff is. But then, this is just Swedish reality these days.

requiring public schools to collect data on immigration status when students enroll

The current Swedish government, consisting of liberals, conservatives, and the far right, want this to be reality. Well, even worse stuff really. They want it to be illegal for an employee in schools, libraries, and hospitals not to report a child and their family if they suspect they may have some problem with immigration. It is so disgusting.

I’m not too surprised by this; the politics of immigration are different in the US, where almost the entire population is immigrants and the descendants of immigrants, and Europe, which didn’t have any real history of immigration until quite recently.

There are some very real benefits to allowing significant levels of immigration:

Strong incentive to leave the country for recent immigrants, and if they stay and eventually legalize their status, they will be uneducated. So it’s a win win for conservatives.

There’s a little bit of history though: the backlash to a similar measure in California resulted in the Republican party becoming a permanent minority in the state legislature.

This is explicitly about barring kids, who are already US citizens, from being able to attend school because their parents are undocumented.

Because the alternative is to create a permanent underclass of people whose lack of access to basic education keeps them from ever improving their own lot or assimilating. That’s not a society I want.

Children aren’t people to conservatives, just levers to manipulate their parents.

No, no. To conservatives children are also a labor force.
