The U.S. government began investigating China’s dominance in the shipbuilding industry, where it manufactures as much as 75%-80% of fleets, during the Biden administration.

Steep levies on Chinese-made ships arriving at U.S. ports have been proposed, up to as much as $1.5 million, as part of a plan to bring more ship manufacturing back to the U.S., a policy which has bipartisan support.

Trick is that Vancouver is a massive port complex and can pick up the slack for the US pacific ports.

And knowing how Richmond, BC operates, expect to see a lot of sudden Chinese business activity where things are being “finished” in Canada then shipped to the US.

This is essentially adding another layer of tax or tariffs on imports, and more impediments to global trade. Basically, Trump is determined to stall trade with the world and fuck the economy.

Trump is gonna slide from ecnomic war into actual hot war pretty soon at this rate.

The Chinese aren’t going to back down no matter what he does. The West is still reliant on China and the U.S. is pissing off everyone.

The economy already gonna be fucked, the question is will Americans stop him before he starts more wars? Doesn’t seem like it unfortunately.

will Americans stop him before he starts more wars?

A really good question. Politically it seems like it’s not going to happen, but I still have (at least naive) hope that the actual US mlitary would not respond on commands should the cheeto order active military operations against China. That would make absolutely no sense in so many ways, no matter how you spin it around, that I’d expect the boots on the ground would just say ‘fuck off’.

But I also tought that the orange clown wouldn’t have a chance on elections either, so we’ll see. And also, I’m across the pond from US, so my information is mostly from European media outlets and social media around here, so take that with suitable grain of salt. I just rather not see the reality where US is fighting China and Europe is left to deal with Russia. Not because we couldn’t handle that, but because that would be just bat shit crazy situation in my lifetime.

What the US always does, is have the cia/nsa blow something important up, then blame it on someone (China, in this case). All of a sudden the country is ready to go to war with China.

Didn’t he already fire the military judges that could overrule his orders?

Orange freak is counting on never stepping down.

Assuming that others are acting rational is sadly often a bad idea. It extents to some governments too, the USA are now like Russia in this regard.

Yes, I imagine there will be a rush to spend a trillion or two setting up infrastructure in a country that can’t keep it’s trade policy consistent for 45 minutes in a row.

China could also say only Chinese ships docking at Chinese ports and now there’s a nice middlemen that also adds cost to the price.
The most efficient is probably ship to Mexico or Canada and import through land, but still need middlemen to do them + extortion by Cartels in Mexico.

Yeah except China needs Canadian resources just like the US does, and they have a one in 2 centuries chance to deprive the US of resources.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
