90s and 80s kids remember when the player “ate” or “spaghettied” tapes. not a view for the faint of heart, especially if it’s your sole copy

Are they really more durable? Yes, they might last longer, but if I’m in my 30s or 40s, I really don’t have to worry about my new CDs dying on me if they don’t have some random production defects. And tapes will wear down by using them.

I don’t understand what you mean. Sorry. What about scratches on the CDs?

Scratches come from bad usage and you can’t use that as argument against CDs. If you keep your CDs in their case and handle them carefully, they will not scratch. But even totally abused CDs are quite resilient - I have some burned CDs in my car that are just flying around without cases in scorching heat with over 50°C in the summer and freezing temperatures in the winter and they are working.

Your tapes will also suffer if you abuse them like that.

Tapes do have some issues sometimes as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky-shed_syndrome
