I read that and was like “of fucking course they did.” Honestly the next paragraph makes it even worse, IMO.
Authorities were heard asking the man – “May I help you, sir?” – at first but as soon as he was engulfed in flames they started yelling at him to get down on the ground. They even drew their guns on the burning man before someone pushed them to get fire extinguishers to extinguish the fire.
Threats of physical violence are the only tool they have in their toolbox. THE ONLY tool.
I’m not normally a big fan of “I told you so” but I wish I could roll back to some ancient forum posts from the early days of Proton and SteamOS and tell some of the surprisingly aggressive naysayers that seemed to crop up in every discussion of them back then to have a look at this.
I swear to God there were pictures of people at Jan 6 wearing “Better Dead than Red” shirts, of the sort that have been around since at least the 80s if not earlier. Expected, predictable, cold war era bumper sticker phrasing on a shirt that I’m pretty sure I’ve been seeing worn by roughly the same kind of personality all this time. The kind of personality who was still calling Russians “the commies” ten years ago.
It’s as if the right forgot all their decades of being ready to kill Russians/Soviets at the drop of a hat, to immediately turn Putin into one of their folk heroes. I get that’s the power of corruption but like - do we just pretend this wasn’t the most vocally anti-Russian segment of US society up until roughly 4 years ago?
Did I miss the bit where they said how it was delivered?
So I’ve never heard of (or maybe I’ve forgotten about) The Motte. It seems to claim to be a sort of “rational discussion is welcome no matter your viewpoint” kind of place, but IME places that go out of their way to tell you that in THIS many words, are actually “we welcome right-wing views under the guise of welcoming everyone’s views, but really we would like some right wing views to be posted.”
What is this place?
This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don’t all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.
The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!
They’ve got a long list of rules in the sidebar, none of which seem to be “bigotry not welcome.”
My question - am I getting the wrong idea because I just read that one thread (which seems mostly right wing folks) or is it indeed yet another “We claim to be for everyone as our cover, but we’re really for the right” kind of a place?
If I could talk to him I might say - I mean, if you are out of your Far Right phase (and it was really just a phase) maybe the idea of a man sucking cock shouldn’t be your go-to example of a thing you imply can never be forgiven.
But that’s none of my business, I’m just a puppet depicting a frog drinking tea.
I admit that I’m a little disappointed I can’t set it as my virtual desktop switch animation, and that it defaults to pointing down when invoked, but I am hopeful it’s just a matter of time on those details. :)
It ain’t quite the compiz/beryl cube, nor even what I remember as the last iteration of the kwin cube, but it’s a step in the right direction!
