If devs have to actively maintain software to support new versions, I would argue that is not better than how consoles handle backwards compatibility. Especially since games tend to be tend to be treated as finished products that devs stop updating once they move on to their next project.

compare that to game consoles where the last gen could be cut off from new games at any given time, and next gen is a crapshoot whether the manufacturer will support backwards compatibility.

But that isn’t the case anymore, and I expect it never will be again. This generation’s transition period has been so heavily reliant on backwards compatibility. Hell, plenty of titles still just launch on PS4 since PS5 can run it anyway.

The only exception has been the Switch, and that’s because it was necessary just this once to break away for a new architecture. I can almost guarantee Switch 2 will be an evolution of Switch 1.

At this point the big three are locked into their current architecture. They need backwards compatibility, if a new console ever tries to break from that it will flop as a result.

I figure we’re coming to the end of discrete generations sooner or later. We’re 4 years into the PS5’s lifespan and plenty of games still launch on PS4 because they don’t need PS5 hardware, and PS5 will run them anyway.

It doesn’t make sense to upgrade to a PS5 Pro if you’ve already got a base PS5, just as it doesn’t make sense to buy a new smartphone every year. But I can see the idea being that whenever you feel due for an upgrade, you buy whatever the current model is.

Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff from Homestuck. Although it actually predates Homestuck and was retroactively converted into media-within-media, does that still count?

Gacha games are bullshit and all, but I don’t think releasing a physical collector’s edition is the bullshit part.

Under Night In-Birth II [Sys:Celes] - Goofy clip of the week

Them’s Fightin’ Herds - Hopped on commentary for Glue Cup 2v2 this week. Need to make more time to actually start playing again.

Mahjong Soul/Riichi City/IRL mahjong - Remember when I said I was done grinding this game mode and wouldn’t do another run?

Splatoon 3 - Haven’t touched Salmon Run since the last Big Run and I’m clearly rusty. Apparently 173 wasn’t even top 20% on this map, damn. At least I finally killed a Triumvirate.

I love everything that Fedi stands for, I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t.

But it’s hard to shake the feeling that I’m mostly posting out into the void. I’m not optimistic about Fedi’s future, I think at this rate Bluesky is going to win even though they’re clearly only paying lip service to federation. Maybe if they can demonstrate that their federation works I’d consider trying a third party server, but it’s clearly not ready yet, and leaves a sour taste in my mouth as yet another corporate thing pretending not to be.

Ever since I swore off Reddit after the API fiasco, and ever since I left the one Discord server where I used to feel like I fit in, it’s felt harder and harder to find alternative places where I can talk about my most niche interests, because nowhere else is big enough for it to be likely I’ll find anyone else who also wants to talk about those same things.

I don’t think Fedi will ever be that for me. The one thing I can say for Cohost is that at the rate it was going, I was able to find a lot more posts relating to my hobbies and fandoms, and I kinda regret that I didn’t post more and lurk less.

It just sucks to feel like there’s nowhere else on today’s dying internet to go that will suit my needs.

Assuming you’re playing proprietary games, I’m not sure why Steam also being proprietary is a step too far for you.

Anyway if you’re playing games with low enough spec requirements to run on an iGPU, they’ll just run, no extra steps needed. Distro shouldn’t matter either.
