You are right, losing weight is really easy. And you will show those lazy fatties by losing 5Kg/10lbs this year.

Wait, did I hear any excuses?

Can somebody shed some light on which sort of immigration is causing an increased support to this party? Are we talking of legal economic immigrants from e.g. the EU, illegal immigrats from wherever, or war refugees? If it’s refugees, where from?

I’m just trying to understand what’s driving this change. I have family in the UK and a lot of the anti-EU sentiment around Brexit seemed to arise from the perceived effect of an influx of legal immigrants from the Eastern bloc of the EU.

It is called the “unmatched count technique” or “list experiment.” It has a wider error range, so you need to poll more people, but you get honest answers.

I used to judge overweight people. Now I understand that I was an asshole.

I have gained 25Kg in the past three years for no apparent reason. I eat the same kind of food, I exercise regularly… yet something is slightly off and my weight continues to slowly creep up.

People talk about calories in, calories out. What is missing from that argument is something as obvious as hunger: in the real world, over the long term, people eat until they are satisfied and no sooner than that. “Count your calories” means “Go hungry every meal”. You can soldier on for a few months or a year, but eventually you will simply eat until you are no longer hungry.

If your hormones are slightly off and you feel a little too hungry for how much energy you actually need, you will slowly gain weight. Healthy people don’t feel hungry every meal, that’s simply not how they maintain a healthy weight.

That is why drugs like Wegovy are so important. They slightly adjust your sense of hunger so that it matches the amount of energy you actually need. Being overweight is in itself a chronic disease with all sorts of complications, from hypertension and diabetes to heart disease and joint problems. We need to stop judging people who suffer from it and start treating them now that we finally can.

But how many overweight people are just eating too much

How do you determine what is “too much”? If you measure it by weigh gain, then all of them are eating too much. But if you measure it by “they eat until they are satisfied and no more than that”, probably most of them aren’t eating too much.

and don‘t exercise a lot or at all?

That I suspect is very common. Then again, many modern jobs involve sitting all day and the day has a finite number of hours, and at least in North America cities are car-dependent so many people don’t even get to commute by foot. It’s an environment that produces very sedentary people.

There is also lack of sleep, which I personally suffer from. How many of us are getting a good eight hours of good quality sleep every night?

There is more to it than “personal responsibility”.

Violence against elected officials is not compatible with democracy. To those cheering at this act of violence: you are as violent and authoritarian as the people you loathe. Shame on you.

I’m all for letting people wear whatever they want. What is the harm?

Here in Canada I’ve seen police officers wearing turbans. Works for me. Nude beaches? Sure thing. I’ve seen people in my neighborhood wearing Saudi-style niqabs and Afghan-style burqas.

Who am I to tell people what they should or shouldn’t wear? How could it be my business?

I’m also for people burning the Qur’an if they so please. Or the bible, or the rainbow flag, or the national flag if that’s how they want to protest. Ideas are there to be challenged.

I draw the line at threatening or harming people.

You mean mixing businesses and residential units in the same walkable neighborhood like we’ve done for thousands of years? That would never work! We must maximize commuting distances in order to reduce traffic and commuting times.

Shit, they have a fuckload more parking than they need because it is mandated by law. Remove car parking minimums and set up bike parking minimums instead.

Drivers just ignore them and drive the speed the road or street is designed to drive.

That’s what drivers usually do. I thought the purpose of in-street signs is to reduce the speed at which drivers feel safe driving because there is a bloody sign in the middle of the road that will scratch their paint. It may work better combined with a chicane.
