Mastodon

Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

Direct message

That’s rather up to us, isn’t it?

A couple of thoughts on this:

  1. I don’t think it’s possible to follow Mastodon accounts through Lemmy - at least not yet. To be honest, though, after playing with their interoperability, in my opinion it’s best to just set up a Mastodon account and use it as a separate platform. The formats are different enough that you’ll be grateful for the more Twitter-like UI experience.

  2. I’m personally not big on messaging actors or other series personnel without a very specific reason. These are personal social media accounts, and not everyone appreciates extra “noise” in their feed. Those who are interested will likely find out about us organically, and we would always reach out if the timing seemed right and we thought they would be receptive.

Yeah, I think he’s absolutely the same person.

Firstly, “The Cage” portrays him at what I think is pretty unquestionably a low point - it wouldn’t be fair to assume he’s normally that angst-ridden.

BOYCE: Chris, you set standards for yourself no one could meet. You treat everyone on board like a human being except yourself, and now you’re tired and you-

PIKE: You bet I’m tired. You bet. I’m tired of being responsible for two hundred and three lives. I’m tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn’t, and who’s going on the landing party and who doesn’t, and who lives and who dies. Boy, I’ve had it, Phil.

The Pike we meet in “Discovery” is a couple of years removed from the mission on Rigel VII, and has been able to bounce back a bit. All the same, his character is practically defined by his faith in Starfleet’s mission, and his willingness to make sacrifices in the pursuit of that mission, while also being acutely aware of the toll that takes…

A tragic tale, told in the most overwrought way imaginable.

Unfortunately, it looks like it’s currently not available in Sweden. Hopefully that will change before season five starts.

Well yes, but I’m sure they could reverse the polarity of something and make it happen.

I think you might be able to draw a parallel with long-running serials like comic books, or even Star Trek itself. They tend to revisit old themes and revolve around a certain status quo.

They tend not to involve multigenerational obedience to an authoritarian regime, though…

I’m not sure to what degree the PD would apply in a situation like this:

  • As is tradition, I must point out that whether a species is warp-capable influences whether Starfleet can make first contact, but even if they can, the PD itself applies to all civilizations, and Starfleet is compelled to minimize their interference.

  • Cultural contamination/interference is minimal, since it’s one individual entering the Federation’s sphere of influence. Ethically, they should probably help the person return home, assuming they want to.

The closest analogue I can think of is Gillian Taylor in Star Trek IV, and the Federation put her to work in pretty short order.

Let’s be honest: at this point, they could make the greatest Star Trek film of all time, and it would only be 1/47 as entertaining as watching the executives at Paramount Pictures stepping on infinite rakes in infinite combinations as they try to make the damn thing.
