OK, I see a lot of post/shitpost about that, but is it that real ? Do you think migration toward Mastodon will last ? Will it be enough to create a long lasting positive momentum ? Or will people slowly leave to other proprietary social networks, or even back to Twitter ?
I think it is voluntarily weighted more heavily towards time than upvote compared to other sites like reddit. The reasoning being (I think) that it allow more diversity and less “snowballing” where the most active user just arrive first, get the upvotes, and stays on top. Effectively killing the possibility of a late very pertinent comment to ever climb up.
I think this is a very difficult equilibrium to find, and it has serious implication on how discussions are built. But I really think Reddit has the opposite problem. Come to a post a few hours/days late, and you will never be heard. I create FOMO and pushes user to come back often. This is to me a business model for sure, but not the best way to organize online asynchronous discussions.
With an exception for luxury vehicle (less than 1000 model produced) that will not be submitted to this ban… Next time they could be even more honest and directly say than the law won’t apply to rich people.
Fighting against “network effects” (I don’t know if this is the right term on English, sorry) for social tools is the hardest fight. The price to pay for the early adopters is just too high to be expected by anyone. I only managed to convince very few people around me.
This is not an individual problem but a collective, political one. Law has to make common standard mandatory. It has done it in the past, but modern capitalism/liberalism fail harder and harder, especially in new technology that emerged under it’s recent development.
Everybody takes for granted that your house power plugs are standardized and work with any electrical device sold in your country. But we could imagine a world with proprietary plugs for a “secure and coherent ecosystem for your home”. This would be bullshit and people understand. But for many modern digital standards, a major cultural fight has been lost…
I guess there is a difference between accepting discussions around a subject with people you disagree with, and accepting someone creating an account specifically designed and named with only one goal : bad faith and low effort posts (yes this is what such a username clearly seems to announce to me).
I spend much time having great discussions with people both online and afk about vaccines, people who are both pro or anti, and it is sincerely interesting. But seeing such a username is as stupid as seeing someone named “vaccineguaranteeyoursurvival”. Those username are themselves clearly false statement that are meant to create unusefull discussions.
Hope this ban isn’t getting canceled.
