Most likely because old buildings are expensive to maintain, expensive to heat, must be refitted for modern lights or communication or have asbestos or lead pipes or don’t comply with modern building standards, such as accessibility.

There is this old cinema from the 1920s in my town that went out of business in the 1990s. Nobody goes to the cinema anymore to fill the 300 seats, it’s a 20min walk away from residential areas and there is no parking nearby. On top of that it needs 30 years of maintenance. Nobody has a good business plan for this building.

While I agree, I think this solution is some nonsense. I bought a “TV” and paid for all the hardware and software that went into it, but I essentially have to use it as a monitor with my own hardware to escape the enshittification.

Sie haben sich doch aktiv gegen e-autos gestellt, Lobbyarbeit geleistet damit alles so bleibt wie es ist, e fuels als Allheilmittel dargestellt, die Entwicklung jahrelang verschlafen und batterieelektrische Antriebe als kurzlebigen trend angesehen damit sie wie seit 100 jahren weiter Verbrenner bauen können. Sorry, aber da hält sich mein Mitleid in Grenzen wenn sie jetzt von der Realität überrollt werden.

Fun fact: instead of cupholders, 1970s cars would proudly advertise the number of ashtrays they had equipped the car with, usually 1 within reach of every seat. This number was equally important as horsepower or price on marketing materials.
