We just took our first step and cancelled Netflix! It’s a small thing compared to some of you, but we’re here to stay! Becoming more and more aware and striving to buy European!
cough kodi cough realdebrid cough
Every single step towards IT independance is good to take, while some can afford to ditch Windows for Linux, erase all their subscriptions, it’s not as easy for others. Every cent that they don’t make from us is the better.
Still have the moral dilemma of cancelling my WoW subscription 😭😭
Out of spite against blizzard I started using private WoW servers a few months ago.
I settled on one called Chromiecraft for several reasons:
- The server code Is open source.
- It has a huge European presence.
- Non profit.
cancelling wow left me a much, much happier person, if that helps
… of course i do get dreams sometimes of my character weeping in a black void and saying “i’m so lonely please come and play with me”… yknow, just normal non-psychologically abusive things that they definitely didn’t mean to do to keep you addicted and coming back again and again
I should consider it, even if I’m still leveling on Classic so the daily boredom isn’t there yet. I already have this boredom with my gacha games haha.
it’s incredibly addictive, and acknowledging that is okay… it’s also fun for a bit! just know when you’re doing it less because you’re having fun and more because you’re in a routine (and sometimes those things are very hard to distinguish)
and if you decide to quit, treat it like smoking or alcohol abuse: you never stop quitting… i “stopped playing” 5 times before it stuck. that’s not a failure - it’s a step on the journey to being completely over it, and 1 day you’ll stop and never go back
granted, i’m pretty sure i was way more addicted than a lot of people and perhaps you don’t need this advice… but fuuuuuuuck video game addiction is absolutely a thing, and it can cause life-long mental health issues. it gets soft-balled so often, but there’s not much difference between it and slot machines at the end of the day except that wow isn’t regulated
Great : it is one small step for man, one giant leap for your humanity. We will force capitalism to come back to it’s senses, play politics all you want but remember: we are customers, not products. In the end we determine how much your shareholders make.
Even the smallest things can make a difference.
Canadian here - canceled Amazon Prime, and deleted Meta’s Facebook and Messenger. I also canceled my Norton subscription and will be replacing it with Avast. I’m canceling Google One cloud storage and have changed my default search engine to Quant.
I know I’m just one family, but if we all do this kind of stuff, what a world it would be!
Avast and Norton are one company for couple years now https://www.gendigital.com/
Source: worked for Avast right before the merger, left because didn’t like the merger
Avast had privacy violations.

Windows defender is good enough if you are on Windows.
Thanks for the tip - hadn’t heard about the Avast news, and wasn’t aware Windows Defender might be sufficient. I’ll look into it.
I’ll confess to still using WhatsApp, cause I don’t have it in my heart to force my 80 year old mother to learn signal.
Oh - and I’m replacing gmail (email and calendar) with Proton. I think the CEO isn’t great, but it’s a very similar service, and it’s not US based. Any recommendations for alternatives to Android and Apple? I’m getting less comfortable with how much data Google has (and I don’t like iOS).
Proton the company recently deleted their Mastodon to exclusively use Twitter. They are very sketchy.
Another thing is virustotal is a good site for scanning programs before running it, since it’ll scan it with every possible virus scanner available.
Windows defender and browsing the web with something ublock origin to block ads is sufficient. And just having virustotal scan a program before running it will protect you from most stuff.
If you do insist on a third party virus scanner then eset is one I used to use for years before sticking with defender. It is from Slovakia.
