Fox propaganda is playing on TVs 24/7 in airports, gyms, bars, hospitals, nursing homes and even military bases. If you see Murdoch’s trash such as Fox or one of his other channels on a public TV ask that they change the channel or change it yourself if you can. It’s time to do put a stop to it.

For changing the channel on a TV that you don’t have the remote to (ex: public TV or nursing home TV) your smartphone might be able to do it if it has an IR blaster. If your phone doesn’t support that there are USB-C dongles you can buy that I believe can do it. Another option is to buy a universal remote. Also for some smart TVs it might be possible to download the app and use that to control the TV.

Also especially if your parents/grandparents are elderly, or have dementia or Alzheimer’s consider setting up parental control on their TV to block Fox News and other right wing channels. It’s important to protect their health. I’d say this will depend on their situation but I trust that you’ll know if this is the right thing to do based on that person’s unique situation.

If you work for a hospital or nursing home maybe try advocating for a facility wide ban of Fox News and other right wing channels. I sincerely believe it will improve health outcomes.

Also when the image was made the percentage of scientists who accept climate change was 97%. Now I’m seeing multiple sources say the percentage is 99%. https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2966 https://theconversation.com/the-97-climate-consensus-is-over-now-its-well-above-99-and-the-evidence-is-even-stronger-than-that-170370

I still don’t understand how they’re allowed to call themselves a news station when they won a misinformation lawsuit by claiming its just “entertainment”

That’s because they didn’t. Tucker Carlson and Fox were sued for libel over statements made by Carlson and Fox’s lawyers said nobody thinks Tucker Carlson is a real journalist but an entertainer. They didn’t claim they don’t have news channels or journalists. Their claim was Tucker Carlson specifically is an entertainer and everybody watching Fox would know that since he was never referred to as a journalist.

The reason they used this defense is because opinions are free speech and you can’t be sued for saying what you think about someone. However, journalists are assumed to be reporting facts not their opinions. Fox does their best to ensure their actual journalists aren’t the ones directly making outrageous claims.

All the more reason why a channel with “News” in its name should not be allowed to have entertainment or opinion shows exceeding a very small percentage of their airtime. A News channel should be news, not opinion.

Fox gets around a lot of shit by having all the bullshit during those shows instead of during traditional news segments with an anchor in a chair reporting on events.

They literally sued the US government to be able to lie. They have zero interest in news, it’s all just propaganda

Fox news is the literatal propaganda channel that all dictatorships have; I never understood how it blcould become legal in the US of all places

We have other channels like that too, including the state sponsored “Voice of America”. When I realized that I was … Well not surprised but definitely not happy.

I remember reading something about laws that changed that made it so the government is much more hands off on the subject of the quality of news reporting…

Can you imagine the bubble you have to live in to see all the major weather events in the world that have been happening in the last few years vs. how things were when you were a kid and still deny the reality of climate change?

I’m a little embarrassed to admit it but at one point I was somewhat of a climate change denier and also a Trump supporter. There’s a very well funded coordinated effort to get people to not take climate change seriously. That combined with doing whatever your “tribe” does is how I got sucked in to climate change denialism. I’m so glad I’m out of that. It’s why I’m now so passionate about these topics, I don’t want other people to suffer the way I did. When I say suffer let me tell you being a conservative isn’t a good life. You’re constantly fed the latest thing to hate and be outraged at along with talking points to repeat nearly verbatim. Now instead of hate I have love and want to make the world better. It really feels so much better.

The reason I’m saying this is in hopes of giving you perspective on how someone might deny climate change despite noticing the climate is different now than in one’s childhood. Even when I was a Trump supporter I remember thinking the weather does seem different but I never made the connection.

Its very refreshing to read a post like this. People have a hard time admitting they were wrong.

I used to believe men needed to fight for what’s theirs (when I was like 20) until I realized how everything was ours and how unfair the world is to women. I would now describe myself as a feminist. I was quite wrong.

Hey, I feel better

I was raised conservatively in a very Republican part of the country with Fox News and Rush Limbaugh everywhere I went. I totally understand what you mean. Propaganda works.

As I grew older and became more educated (in the university sense) I really began to question how I had been raised but still was unsure of everything. Would you believe that it was Elon Musk - of all people - who convinced me climate change was real?

This was 20ish years ago now when he wasn’t publicly fascist, transphobic, etc. I found an interview with him on the topic and the interviewer asked something like “What would you say to all of those who are skeptical of climate change?”

He replied along the lines of “Climate change is a scientific idea proposed from the analysis of scientific data. If you want to properly analyze and critique a scientific idea it should be using the language of science, which is statistical probability. In science few things are 100% fact but rather are analyzed in terms of the probability of something being true. So we should ask ourselves what is the probability that climate change is really happening as the scientists say. Even if that number is low - say it’s only 1% - that it a 1% risk of catastrophe to our planet and lives. Isn’t that enough of a risk for us to do something about it?”

I started looking at things very differently after hearing that perspective and was more open to looking at information with less of my previous bias and then suddenly I realized it was much much larger than 1% even.

Wow! Thank you so much for making that! I got the image from Wikipedia. It’s even worse than I thought. I think the article on Wikipedia should be updated.

ah sure enough! on the actual page it has text underneath which provides the missing data

Among climate scientists in 2013, 97% of peer-reviewed papers that took a position on the cause of global warming said that humans are responsible, while 3% said they were not. Among Fox News guests in late 2013, this topic was presented in a contrarian way, with 31% of invited guests believing it was happening and 69% not.[1]

It’s been this way since day 1, and that was almost thirty fucking years ago.

Corporate news has failed catastrophically. It’s just screaming now. Well, and propublica. They’re pretty good.
