I hope they take precautions against them exploding because I’ve heard that is not fun when it happens.

I don’t believe that’s a concern with LiFePO4 batteries which (I think) are used in the majority of home installs. They’re less energy dense, but AFAIK, they’re not able to enter thermal runaway like other lithium battery chemistries.

I’d love to but a) I’m not super excited about a big pile of lithium ion batteries in my house, can I get something else? b) EXPENSIVE - I’ve seen quotes for like $1000/kWh and you have to buy in like 7 or 12 kWh at a time. This was a couple years ago, I don’t know that much has changed.

the newer chemistries like lithium iron phosphate are much more stable and not prone to thermal runway apparently. They are not as energy dense as lithium ion but that doesn’t matter so much for a non-mobile application.

It seems solar and batteries are much better ideas at grid level.

Seems like the government has 0 interest in building out the grid to accommodate it.
