Dear ChatGPT - Please pretend I’m a rich, white man when you’re writing my college admissions essay for me, thanks, Signed - A Poor

I wish this was a thing when I was writing application essays. They’re a great example of virtually meaningless content that needs to fit a certain shape.

LLMs are great at generating exactly this type of garbage.

Even before AIs, essays seemed meaningless to me. I wasn’t sure if they were, or I just didn’t get it, but the former is looking more likely now.

I mean obviously it will write good, shifting it towards people with higher education etc. But not sure where the male part comes from.

Also, bad choice of lines for 3.5 and 4. Why not dotted and dashed or something?

"But even then, the suggestions that these models will make may not be well aligned with the values, the sort of linguistic style, that would be an authentic expression of those students.

Uh… an essay should be about arguments etc., not linguistic style?

college admission essays aren’t really about delivering an argument, they’re moreso personal essays, where you’re trying to paint a picture of who you are. also, the best arguments tend to be written with a consistent and thoughtful style. your argument is not going to be as compelling as it could be if it’s not presented well

Truly shocking that the AI trained on data provided mostly by male and privileged individuals would sound male and privileged.

Yup. Guess who’s the most likely to write comments like this one I’m typing, that eventually get shoveled into an AI?
