OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) – For Kenyetta Gentry, the Oakland A’s are a part of her family’s DNA.

“My grandfather was security here in the 80s - that I know of. If not, even longer. And my auntie, Auntie Pat, she worked here as security as well,” Gentry said.

A tradition in which Gentry has participated.

For the past 24 years, she’s worked for Aramark, the company that runs the shops and concession stands at the Coliseum for home games.

After all those years of service, Gentry says she was shocked to find out Monday that Aramark will not be offering any severance to their employees following the A’s last game on Thursday.

In addition, Gentry says she and her coworkers will also lose their health insurance.

That’s terrible and it sucks, but honestly they announced the team moving April 2023. They gave 1.5 years notice 1.5 years ago right? How much more do you expect?

Sounds like the company is also going out of business… typically we can’t expect a bankrupt company to provide these benefits. This is why there needs to be a gov’t payer of last resort here for these sort of things.

Yeah. They’ll get unemployment though, right? Since they’re being laid off, they should qualify for unemployment. They’re in California, so they should get benefits.

You really shouldn’t be surprised about losing health insurance either, since in the US it’s tied to your job. I assume, it being CA, that they’ll have some form of medicaid for unemployed people as well.

If she’s worked there for 24 years, and she started when she was 18, that means she was born no later than 1982.

But she might have had other odd jobs before that, so I suspect she’s probably from Gen X, a generation that grew up in an era with a future that included Social Security and Pensions; sucks to learn the hard way that Capitalists don’t care about tenure or loyalty, and that most of us are numbers on an expense sheet to them.

Work Reform

!workreform@lemmy.world

Create post

A place to discuss positive changes that can make work more equitable, and to vent about current practices. We are NOT against work; we just want the fruits of our labor to be recognized better.

Our Philosophies:

  • All workers must be paid a living wage for their labor.
  • Income inequality is the main cause of lower living standards.
  • Workers must join together and fight back for what is rightfully theirs.
  • We must not be divided and conquered. Workers gain the most when they focus on unifying issues.

Our Goals

  • Higher wages for underpaid workers.
  • Better worker representation, including but not limited to unions.
  • Better and fewer working hours.
  • Stimulating a massive wave of worker organizing in the United States and beyond.
  • Organizing and supporting political causes and campaigns that put workers first.
