It’s also worth it to point out that, for people that care about supporting content creators but don’t want to or can’t afford to do so individually through services like Patreon, Youtube Premium views pay creators far more than a regular view.

This is ridiculous.

  • their algorithms are crap and keep ramming right-wing bullshit down my throat
  • they keep trying to get me to play YouTube games
  • they list YouTube Shorts multiple times in the Home Screen and most of the time it is just over-sexualised jailbait.
  • using anonymous Google to find a video on YouTube is more effective than using YouTube search

I am seriously thinking of getting an Apple Vision Pro just so I can use Juno and bypass all the bullshit.

Time I planned an exit strategy.

I’m gonna be honest dude. The “shorts is just over-sexualised jailbait” is a you issue, and more of a self report on the shit you watch, or you being hyperbolic. I often watch shorts and have not once ever seen anything remotely as you describe.

You get served kid videos because you watch them, which is sick of you. It’s wild you’d admit that when common knowledge is algos show you content you seem to like.

Jailbait is probably the wrong word, but every single short has a scantily clad young lady. It isn’t the Algorithm because all I watch are Machining Videos, DIY and Restoration Videos and the occasional Science and Natural History video.

The most risqué channel subscribe to is VanWives.

Speaking of which, the Algorithm never serves anything that I subscribe to. I would better off going straight to my Subscriptions page.

I will maintain my observation that the Algorithm is shit.

The shorts thing is on you buddy. Never had any of that and it’s 100% of shorts by people I watch, or of people that are similar to who I watch.

So what you’re saying is you trust YouTube to do it right? With shorts? I got bombarded with bullshit in shorts, the 50 times they got it in front of my eyes somehow, I never watched any of that in my normal yt rounds. That algorithm is made to brainwash, not to serve you what you want.

I don’t need to “trust” anything other than my eyes. I watch shorts often and never get anything close to “brainwashing” content and it is always tailored to what I watch. I don’t know what your goal is with this comment - are you trying to convince me that that isn’t the case?

The shorts algorithm is really weird I find. The ones it advertises are usually essentially thinly veiled smut (whereas most videos I watch are tech/science/aviation stuff). But (and I think this is important), if I start watching shorts, most of them are normal type shorts in line with what I’d want to watch. So it feels like it puts some stuff up it thinks will grab your attention but doesn’t push it once you’re watching. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. But, just comes across as weird to me.

I don’t get right wing stuff in shorts, but I do sometimes get it in the main videos suggested. How I think it happens is, I watch some videos about computer games, or perhaps a video on a games/science topic which is made by a channel that either also has right wing content OR their viewers also watch such stuff. So it figures, well if they viewed video A, and viewers that watched video A also watched video B, let’s push video B to that user too. The algorithm doesn’t really understand left or right wing, just pattern matching from views and other metrics.

I find if you start telling youtube that you don’t want to see them, they will go away, at least for a while.

If you click on something the algorithm goes hard on that content from then on. I clicked on a skateboarding short (which I usually have no interest in) and now half my feed is skateboarding, constantly.

One misclick, one hate watch, is all it takes.

Yeah, you sometimes need to curate your videos with the “dont recommend channel” or “dont like the video” or whatever its name is. It tends to happen when I go down a rabbithole - last time I got recommended stupid supra memes from some Turkish guy and watched a couple in a day. Next day, my entire feed is “IS THAT A SUPRA?!!” memes. A couple of clicks later and it’s back to what it was

If you’ve followed the YT news you’d know this isn’t true. They literally advertise sex to kids in the ads. I watch a bunch of travel people, animal and history programs, and woodworking/handyman stuff. Never once clicked on a short cause they don’t cast. Every day they put up some Korean cheerleader or other bullshit I don’t give 2 shits about. YT algorithm is manipulative as fuck and sucks now. I get most of my vid referrals from outside sites.

I don’t get allot of that, possibly because I have History turned off and refuse to turn it back on.

  • I vastly avoid Right Wing content, and most of what I do encounter is like old school Republican, reeeally old school Republican. They are as pissed at the Right Wing’s take over by the Alt-Right(and worse)
  • YouTube has games?!?
  • The shorts content I get is mostly computer content and news, some branding because I have entered contests, and that is it. I have seen 1 short that was even approaching jailbaity and it was an add for a coming of age movie.
  • It has been literally over a year since I used Google to find a video (well except for a tech support video I keep loosing the link to that I use to help people with installing Windows 11 Locally) and I have been using Startpage which anonymizes Google results.

If you disabling your Ad ID and turning off your history and you still get all that BS I would be looking for an Exit Strategy to.

I usually get bombarded with Right-Wing content after I watch Juice Media videos. Also, if a watch a feminist video, it is usually followed by recommendations of “AnTi-WoKe” mansplaining videos. it is if they want to show “Both Sides” after I watch something about maintaining democracy and contributing to society in a positive way.

The YouTube Games are just another banner of unwanted “content” like Shorts.

The T&A shorts are usually of young women in jeggings and crop-tops doing risqué actions; if your mouse passes over the Shorts for a millisecond , YouTube autoplays them and registers as a view, creating a negative feedback loop of more and more scantily clad young women doing mundane things in a risqué way.

I don’t know… maybe it is because I am consuming most of my YT content on desktop and that carries over to my android experience. As a matter of fact I don’t consume shorts on Android and that may be the difference. My feed on desktop is all computer stuff, CBC stuff, occasional Marvel stuff, and ASMR stuff, and half of that I don’t watch.

I really feel sorry for you if that is what your Android Experience is. I would suggest GrayJay or New Pipe to get out of the Algorithm then. I could remember back about 5 years ago when I started getting full episodes as an ad, of absolute religious trash, and I am talking when I reported them the channel was banned in a single report trash, at a time when I, due to illness, that I would listen to while soaking in the tub with a lift to get my sick ass in an out, and they would put 45 minute shows as ads. I would get so angry but its a long ad, so it wasn’t worth me getting out of the bath to skip it, and 15 minutes later of “Kill the HOMO-Sexuals” and “that current bad thing happened because we voted in those godless communists and socialists… why we should just hang them and save the country! A-MEN!!!” and I was using up power on my bath lift to get my sopping wet butt up and report their ass. After the 5th report I temporarily moved to New Pipe and stuck to desktop where I got full episodes as ads but not THOSE episodes.

YouTube can really fuck themselves over when they sell contra-ads on leftist, or any media, and now they are reaping the whirlwind with the ad platform and the search platform in the middle of Antitrust right now.

It’s still the highest value streaming service out there and worth even more than that. Atleast for me it is. I still wont pay for as long as adblocker works but when they inevitably prevent me from using it, I’ll subscribe. I have zero moral arguments for why I should be getting this all for free. YouTube essentially is the internet for me.

No good reason to support a monopoly. Sure, I know we can’t help some monopolies (grocery stores, internet service, etc.), but this is an entertainment thing.

There are unlimited ways to be entertained nowadays and YouTube is not a necessity. Let’s see how well YouTube gets by if we all stop watching for fun, and instead only watch when we have to, such as when we’re trying to learn how to fix a car the one time a year we need it.

I don’t get the comparison between YouTube Premium and Spotify Premium. YouTube does much more than Spotify so of course it’ll be more expensive.

Those are steep price jumps, though. Google must have pretty high confidence in their adblock blocking tech.

Well yeah, but Spotify also does more than Youtube in some ways. Like, have a minimum amount of podcasts on it (I know I know, why not use a separate podcasting app, but for the little podcasts I listen to it’s easier having it all in one app that is known to shit like Sonos and stuff), or have bands that aren’t well known in the US.

Don’t get me wrong, I loathe Spotify, but compared to Youtube’s audio side they’re a much much better experience. Hence I would usually rate them on-par in what they should cost: With Spotify you get a better experience, with Youtube you also get ad-free videos.

I agree that YouTube is pretty much dead as a audio medium (Google Play Music was so much better!) but things like podcasts don’t need Spotify; they work over RSS so any app is supposed to be able to play them (though I guess most people probably don’t know what podcasts are supposed to be these days). I’ve loaded my Patreon podcasts into Podcini, for instance, proving that subscription models aren’t a problem for podcasts either.

The hosting cost difference between videos and music is staggering, though. I’m still surprised YouTube can afford to exist on ads alone, even if they play three ads for every video. It’s unreasonable to expect YouTube to be the same price as Spotify if you watch any video content.

Curated music services like Spotify and Apple Music can give some great recommendations.

ThE aLgOrYtHm of YouTube gives terrible recommendations. It is as if it has no musical taste whatsoever.

To me that is the problem and why I’ll probably cancel with this price hike. I don’t want more. I got YT Premium for YouTube, mostly to support creators, cause fuck watching Ads. But I have to pay for Music, Podcasts and whatever other garbage they try to stuff in there. It was the same with Prime. I don’t want to watch your stupid series, I just want free shipping, twitch prime and occasionally an old movie.

Sorry for the rant but these stupid subscription “bundles” are so annoying. The whole ecosystem is becoming shittier every year.

They are all doing these offensive bundles of crap. It is worse than the days of Cable.

We are subscribed to Apple One Family Premier. I need the large data for my family to backup their devices, but none of us want Fitness+ or News+. It is cheaper to get this extra crap we don’t want, than to just get Data.

I just need a way to disable Fitness+ without disabling the Workout features. This is the same as disabling Shorts, Music and Games in YouTube.
