I finally blew the dust off of my copy of Bravely Default for the 3ds… I’m only a few hours in but this might be the most beautiful jrpg I’ve played on this console. The story so far seems somewhat stereotypical, but the art is gorgeous and the gameplay has been amazing so far! Just wanted to share!

There is a hurdle late in the game which you’ll know when you hit it, just in case you somehow haven’t heard about it. Do try to get past it though, the payoff is worth it.

Your comment was the first indication of any sort of midgame hurdle. A reviewer on YouTube vaguely described a point where things suddenly became unbearably repetitive. Does that sound like the hurdle to which you were referring?

That’s what I’m talking about, yeah. And TBH it’s actually closer to the end than the middle. Also I didn’t find it that big of a deal, but your mileage may vary. I hope you can get past what a bunch of others seem to hate because the payoff is so good.

Ok. Well your opinion is encouraging. If I find myself at that point I will be sure to press through. Frankly I’ve been playing with the encounter rate at maximum so far just to rapidly level up, so I feel like just maybe my tolerance for redundancy is high. I really hope it’s not a game-breaking experience.

The story gets amazing, too! It’s one of my favorite games on the system and the best on in its own series. Although, I’d also recommend Bravely Second and Bravely Default 2. Second is a story sequel, BD2 is stand-alone.

So far, if Bravely Second is as good as good as the original, then I definitely look forward to it.

The story seems generic at first, but it goes places later.

One feature I really liked about this game was that you can adjust the encounter rate, even down to 0%. No in-game consumables or equipment needed, just an option in the menu. If you want to gain a few levels, you can crank it up. If you just want to revisit an old location because you missed an item, you can turn it off.
