I think the joke here is anyone ever thinking the prices would go down under any circumstances.

Me fucking too. It took until this bit for me to realize:
“This is an absolute travesty,” fumed Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen. “Our cutting-edge AI is supposed to maximize profits, not get hacked by some joker and his cardboard cutouts. I demand a full investigation – and restitution!”
The funny thing is, if such a thing happened Kroger would definitely be upset. I say, if they want to haggle with you about every orange and apple, they can hire people to do it. If they use “AI”, then they have to accept that people will easily game the system.
