The Texas Department of Public Safety will no longer allow Texans to change the sex on their driver’s license — even if they have a court order.

Texas now joins a number of conservative states that have set new policies that aim to block or make it more difficult for transgender people to adjust their driver’s licenses to reflect their gender identity, including Florida, Kansas and Missouri. Some of those have drawn legal challenges.

In a statement Wednesday, the department said as of Aug. 20, the agency will no longer comply with court orders mandating the change to driver’s licenses after Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office raised concerns about their validity.

I’m conflicted. On the one hand, I’m sad that trans people won’t be able to have identification that matches who they are. On the other hand, I don’t trust Texas with a database of people who requested a chance, essentially giving them a database of trans people
