I have a large DVD collection containing lots of niche titles that don’t appear to be on any public tracker. I would like to share my love of these films with the world.

I have access to a server that’s online 24/7 with a symmetric link and no data cap. My plan is to use a docker container with a web transmission instance to seed all of my material through a VPN provider (for my own safety). My server was last rebooted 200 days ago; I intend to rack lots of uptime seeding with my server. I have technical skills and I can ensure I’ll have an open port to accept connections.

Questions: what steps should I take to protect myself in seeding these DVDs? Is there a guide or some recommendations you can provide to get the best quality out of the many hours I’m going to spend ripping? Is it possible to trace the DVD reader that made the rip? Are the cool kids still uploading torrents or is there a better technology I should be using?

Overall, I have plenty of content to share, but I don’t want to put myself at risk when I do.

I think you’ll be okay with using a solid VPN and torrenting the files. Torrents are still very popular

Even if the answer may seem obvious, I still appreciate the input to make sure I am not too outdated. Thank you!

Yes… but what tracker would you recommend for uploading the torrents to? I know I’m not OP but I’ve been thinking about dvd ripping lately too

Power to you!

If you can, please consider uploading them to Usenet as well.

One other good method for secure distribution is supposed to be IPFS.

It’s not anonymous, much like torrents. And honestly, I’ve never seen warez on there…

You can seed anonymously with I2P. It has a built in torrent client. If you don’t want to use it, there’ qtorrent which supports I2P and anonymous mode.

There are open trackers on I2P e.g http://opentracker.skank.i2p/ and http://opentracker.dg2.i2p/ both trackers don’t have a search interface though, so probably people won’t find your torrents unless they are very popular. You can upload the torrents to http://tracker2.postman.i2p which has a good interface.

With qtorrent you can seed in both the clearnet and I2P at the same time. Either just use the open trackers or postman’s, or both. Either way, having them on I2P would be great.

I2P makes anti-hacking server protections go mad. You first need to check whether your servers TOS doesn’t say anything about port-scanning or hacking.
