Let’s hope this is the end of Netanyahu’s coalition.

This is good, I support Israel against aggression, but the the ultra-orthodox want the aggression, they’re as bad as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Agree as well. Tribal religious nutjobs are the cause of all of these problems, let them pay price of their ideology.

Do the ultra-orthodox support what is happening in Palestine? Are they pacifists who want the killing to stop?

I’m all for letting people refuse to fight if they are sincerely anti-war. But if they are out there cheering the genocide that’s happening, then make them put their necks on the line.

From my understanding, the Ultra-Orthodox are the lynchpin in Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition so they nominally support the events thus far.

That’s not entirely correct. The Ultra-Orthodox spectrum is composed of different factions/sects that hold widely varying beliefs and interpretations of Judaism.

While a majority of Ultra-Orthodox are represented in the current government, there are also some Ultra-Orthodox factions that reject the Israeli state completely. Some won’t fight due to their religious studies, some due to their pacifism, some due to their pro-Palestinian sentiment, and other will fight because of their convictions or their desire to settle in the west bank.

The infighting between these groups and their sometimes messianic beliefs and discussions are sometimes very intransparent from the outside. Sometimes internal feuds even erupt in street riots between groups or police.

True they are not a monolith, however it seems that the Likud party’s coalition is being supported by Shad and the United Torah Judaism, both Haredi parties. Because the coalition is only up 4 seats I stated they’re the smaller parties lynchpin in Netanyahu’s government.

The ultra-orthodox have wanted this for a long time and it’s one of the reasons Israel’s government was trying to curtail the power of the judiciary. You may remember there were protests in Israel over last summer over this.

This isn’t about Pacifism, but more about autonomy and seclusion. I don’t think they mind exposing their youth to bombs and bullets as much as exposure to cosmopolitan ideals they get from mixing with Israel’s more secular youth. It’s similar to the impetus for religious parents to do home-schooling in the US.

Not only do they wholeheartedly support it, but they emphatically push it. The irony of pushing for something that you don’t have to actually fight for, like they are “better” than other Israelis.

They are also the ones that are rabid supporters of Netanyahu as well, apparently because he tried to give them preferential treatment.

Yeah the amount of Finding Out possible from this decision has high schadenfreude potential.

Just being religious doesn’t require you to join that crowd with its weird main rabbinate and preferential treatment in laws and state funding.

So it’s basically lots of uneducated idle fundamentalist morons. Their worldview is too simple for comic books, and at the same time their level of life is kinda normal.

I don’t think such people make useful soldiers, but being that stupid you usually support whatever you hear from your leaders.

A friend of mine very easily repeats stupid shit of that kind and has recently passed an exam to become a rabbi. Still to “maybe Israel shouldn’t have invaded Lebanon twice” in a conversation about Hezbollah he answered “ok, maybe they shouldn’t, I agree”. That’s a fucking qualitative difference. If he manages to repatriate and meet those people, I suspect he’ll experience “Idiocracy” firsthand.

That said, secular (but nationalist) Israelis have quite a few slurs for them and in general don’t like them. So use as a cannon fodder, say, in case of attacking Lebanon, - is kinda possible.

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
