Despite the internal issues Canada is facing, sadly, there are worse external problems to worry about at the moment.

European here, proud of Canada for standing up to those echoing totalitarian rethoric. We all need unison, and given that even the so-called ‘freest nation on earth’ is at the precipice of fascism, no one should underestimate that possibility from happening to any other free nation if given the chance to fester.

For a safer world for all of us, Europe has your back.

This was a real nail biter at the beginning. Atlantic Canada usually votes liberal and the conservatives were making unseen gains.

+1 for Canada - Europe axis and more collab. We just might be able to stand up to the 2 biggest bullies on the planet.

the so-called ‘freest nation on earth’

No-one but themselves ever called it that.

It’s like the Lucky Strike BAR Honda team. Nothing lucky about them. Zero race victories. 15 podiums out of 118 races. Zero constructor points on its debut.

We keep that a secret. So if we’re gonna do it, you won’t know until after.

I hear it’s a car dealership now for fat old white guys, so maybe no one will notice.

So we’re clear, so the right wing propaganda that’s all over Reddit doesn’t spread here like wild fire, the Canadian “liberals” are just as bad as the Americans.

And the reason they formed a minority government is the same reason Kamala lost, their insistence on genocide. The liberal party won in Canada, because the Canadian people rejected the conservative party more, but the liberal minority government has no bite.

They didn’t defeat fascism, they (like us) desperately want a third option and didn’t have a feasible one. It’s not as bad as it could have been, so sure, “Great work, Canada!” But now the real work starts if they don’t want to go through this same drama next election.

They just kept the fascist coin on the same face for another cycle.

I haven’t heard a single Canadian mention that as an election issue, and I’d been following the election. I live in a metropolitan city, and I have many Muslims in my social circles. I also have people in my social circles who lean more NDP, and others who are further left than that.

i dont think that played it big role why she lost, both parties support Israel every election, the only place that would have any effect is michigan which is a muslim stronghold of voters. its the fact that there was significant election inteference that wasnt questioned, and she is a woman and POC. her campaign underestimated the msygoyny of AA and hispanic groups which are traditionally conservative in nature.

foreign policy has the least effect on elecitons than domestic issues, like the fabricated inflation problems, or grocery prices.

if she had not said those words about israel, it mightve boosted her support a little, but not as much as you think compared to the other issues: sexism and racism.

Oh well if you haven’t heard it, that’s all the data we need. You have many Muslims in your social circles after all, and only Muslims care about genocide right?

What an arrogant response.

Canada is in existential need of electoral reform. People should be able to vote for who they actually want to represent them.

Americans still get confused about how the Democrats and Republicans swapped ideologies entirely many decades ago.

Absolutely not joking when I say Joe Manchin kept getting elected as a Democrat because most West Virginians still think that Democrat = Dixiecrat.

Fun fact: Democrats and GOP swapped colors in the 2000 election.

It is, because on the day of our election he spouted off, yet again, about us becoming the 51st state.

Honest to god if he hadn’t said a word about forcing us to become the 51st state right after his inauguration the Liberals would have lost and we would be fucked.

Florida man cost the Conservatives big time … ergo he lost them the election.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
