AlternativeTo is a large database of software and online services focused on showing popular alternatives to applications. They have a lot of filters that you can use to find the right app for you and hopefully they will soon include an EU or country of origin filter!

Btw, it’s a Swedish website.

“currently owned by” with adjacent flag would also be helpful, since american asset management companies love to buy companies and expertise from abroad

Is AlternativeTo actually good? It’s always come across to me like SEO garbage. The sort of thing that felt AI generated long before LLMs came on the scene a couple of years ago. So I’ve always avoided it.

It is curated by humans and only humans, so I don’t see the relation to LLMs… Only problem is that it has a smaller userbase or arguments compared to actual comparison articles.

It’s been pretty decent enough in my experience but gotta go to the original. I recall there used to be a .com or alternativeDASHto knockoff that used to show up in google results and that was definitely SEO spammy (been a couple years since I accidentally clicked into one though.)

It’s the best goto for…well…alternatives. I help a lot there and had many productive talks with devs too. Never noticed something fishy.

It’s a pity it isn’t open data, but no opensource project has been able to replicate their interface and make the data available, so I guess this is the best we can do at the moment. Still, my goto when looking for alternatives.

If only they switched the website button with the alternatives button.

Because that’s just awful UX.
