I’m learning Spanish and want to support Canada. A google search didn’t turn up any Canadian language learning sites. Babbel is German owned so would be okay. Does anyone know of Canadian-owned sites?

CBC has Mauril for French.

For Spanish I’m not aware of anything Canadian, but Language Transfer has previously come up as a good alternative to Duolingo.

I highly, highly recommend Language Transfer. They have French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Swahili. Also an introduction to understanding music, which is also excellent, using the same teaching techniques, and an introductory course in English for Spanish speakers.

You can use YouTube videos, SoundCloud MP3s (downloadable), or the excellent app.

Thank you for both of these recommendations! My daughter is serious about learning French, this is a great addition to her classes in school.

Not Canadian, but European: Language Transfer is the best language learning system you can find. Free, too!

I have used their Spanish course, and it is excellent.

Spanish is my sixth language and aside from total immersion, Language Transfer is the best thing I have found.

LingQ is Canadian; heard about it on c/buyEuropean community.

Unfortunately the app is closed source and only on playstore, so won’t use that on my main profile. Could install it on my sandboxed “google” profile, but then I’d be much less likely to just quickly do some learning.

The web functionality is pretty broken on both Firefox mobile (especially) and vanadium.

I get a very uber-capitalist, biz-bro vibe from the guy running it, and the site in general. So I don’t think I’ll be paying a subcription for premium. The free tier only gives 20 “LingQs” which if you read the founders methodology, is the whole basis of his learning method, so you NEED unlimited lingQs which is a hefty monthly sub. 🤢

Not sure if I believe their claims of how effective their method is or if they’re just looking to make a quick buck.

Sidenote: If anyone wants to try the OP’s question on hard mode, I’d be interested in any Canadian (notUS) opensource language apps.

Lingo Legend is a fun, Canadian-made app.
