Sorry to say that the fast majority of German Nazis did not only get off without any form of repercussions after 1945, they often even kept their jobs in government. The Nürnberg and subsequent trials only covered the high profile cases, that had not successfully fled. For the Nürnberg trials that were 22 people, while the subsequent trials only found 2,500 of 100,000 arrested Germans guilty of war crimes. Of those only 177 were tried, 142 were convinced and 25 were sentenced to death. These numbers also exclude the 1,600 German scientists, engineers and technicians that the US government took with project paperclip.

And it wasn’t for a lack of documents.

Those were the evil Germans immigrating after the war. Not to be confused with the fine upstanding Ohio Hitlers.

You are a source of joy to the regime.

They very much enjoy all discussion that suggests that they can do what they want, and get away with it.

Excellent work on discouraging resistance.

What? I’m saying the Nürnberg trials should have been much larger and stricter. I’m saying don’t just hope that some outside force will bring justice, because historically that just won’t happen. It’s just coping. It is not resistance.

The reaction to these old Nazis remaining in power lead to the founding of the RAF, who decided to actually do something about it. If necessary with violence. It’s a fascinating piece of history that explains why Germany, despite the defeat, remained pretty conservative and it’s justice system remained “blind on it’s right eye”.

If you make a historical comparison, maybe read up on it instead of getting mad at someone pointing out a misconception.

I don’t think there’s gonna be a Nuremberg trials this time around

The trials will be home brewed.

Americans don’t like being told what to do by foreigners.

This time around though, there will be no appeasement that allows for a Southern Strategy again.

Don’t have to wait for trials. Operation anthropoid is an example of some chads taking matters into their own hands.

You can evade justice if your Reich lasts long enough.

It’s sad when old corrupt criminals just outlive any repercussions, and the systems that shields them becomes the norm.

Even if WW2 was won by Germany, nazis were the targets of assassinations. They would not have been safe for the rest of their life.

Let’s see how long this one lasts against one of the most well armed civilian populations in history, who have been fed a steady diet of the Right to Bear Arms, and Stand Your Ground.

The regime will be fucked the first time their ICE agents try to scoop a Don’t Tread on Me type in the middle of the night, and get a bullet salad for their troubles.

By now, even the most fervent supporters can see that if one of them gets scooped by mistake, there is zero mechanism to correct it, and they’re as good as dead.

“Fucked” how? You think they’ll give a shit? MAGA people will just say the person deserved it, or was a secret liberal or some bullshit to justify it.

You’re not grasping what I’m saying.

The regime is ruthless, but clumsy and stupid. They will attempt to kidnap the wrong person it’ll be a staunch MAGA acolyte or someone they care about, and they’re gonna Stand. Their. Ground.

You’re probably going to say that that won’t happen, on account of the populace being docile and pacified by job stability and low grocery prices.

More violence is coming to USA, that seems a given, but daily shootouts just means more resources to the “militia” the gov uses/chooses to use. And that can get normalised. And the percentage of gun-owners killed vs ICE agents killed acceptable (basically nobody can reasonably fight off an armed force on their own, it’s logistics, not a shonen match). Good TV news tho.

There is no deterrent in ICE getting shot on the job (that doesn’t affect Washington at all), the deterrent would be gun owners grouping together & taking on the gov as a force.

To be fair, the only wars that the US has arguably lost, has been against irregular insurgencies.

Showerthoughts

Create post

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
