Baldur’s Gate 3 just called, it says that anon is a moron.

Warframe also called. They have all of the cool stuff Destiny fans have been begging for since forever.

And, somehow: Mario kart mode? Better-gameplay-loop-than-star-citizen space ship to ship combat? Boy band villains.

Also they recently re-optimized their game and added a bunch of modern compression algorithms so a DX12 game runs decently on the switch.

I sincerely hope warframe never dies. I love it to pieces.

Even EA has managed to make a better starship combat game than Star Citizen. Obviously it’s EA so naturally they abandoned it but still. For about 10 minutes there EA made a good game, full VR support too.

I don’t know what it is, but… I have always been a Baldur’s Gate fan of the first hour. BG1, when I played it back in 1998, blew my mind so completely that I STILL consider it the best CRPG ever made, hands down. After that came NWN and NWN2 and I enjoyed those also. It was also what introduced me to D&D and I read a ton of D&D novels after that.

So you’d think that when BG3 came along, especially with me being Belgian, I’d be completely stoked. I immediately bought the game and… found to my greatest surprise that I just couldn’t enjoy it. At all.

See, I bought and tried Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2 and had the EXACT same problem. I just couldn’t/can’t get over the turn-based combat. It sucks so much ass. Realtime with “hidden” dnd rules was the way to go.

So now whenever I see people gushing about BG3 I somehow feel like I “failed” myself for being disappointed in what seems to be the objectively best game ever made according to, well, everyone.

Maybe it’s just a sign that there’s something wrong with me and that I’ve lost the ability to enjoy good games. Ah well.

As somebody who played turn-based RPGs first, I find that real-time with pause RPGs are slow, overly punishing and have no viable way to strategize. I dislike them very much.

It’s not a problem with turn-based, per se. I love Xcom. I finished Expeditions: Rome which is 100% turn-based combat on a grid exactly like BG3 & D:OS I&II. I love D&D rulesets as well. It’s just something about the exact combination of these things in BG3 that really REALLY irks me and prevents me from enjoying the game at all.

Nothing wrong with you. It is just that this mechanics is not something that can be a source of fun for you. This happens, and it is normal. Blaming you for this is same as blaming someone for not liking salty food or pink colour: makes no sense. And when you look at all those folks enjoying BG3, remember there is me who still did not have a chance to play BG1, and won’t have one for some years to come. In a way you are more lucky than me :)

Thanks :) Can I ask why you can’t play BG1? The Enhanced Edition on Steam isn’t very expensive and compatible with almost all possible modern OS’es. I can very much recommend it ;)

Like what exactly? Micro transactions? Cash shops in full price games? Base games costing 80 bucks now? Incomplete games sold as early access? Ray tracing that almost looks as good as raster for a quarter of the frames? Fake frames to keep up? Most gamers don’t even play modern AAA titles. They play games like Minecraft and Fortnite which came out over five years ago. Hell. the exception is CS2 and that’s just CSGO to the point the Micro transactions carry over.

What new ideas?

Time-loop mechanics, Trico’s AI in The Last Guardian, the whole gameplay of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the Nemesis System in Shadow of War, Disco Elysium… all of it, the co-op gameplay in the Dark Pictures Anthology games, the Alien’s AI in Isolation… the list goes on. Stop being a doomer.

The real takeaway for me from posts like this is that 4chan must be aging. Kids are, at the very least, becoming stupid somewhere else.

Triple A inherently stands for risk avoidant, and money grabbend. It takes a special exception to get an AAA game that is more than ok. But the best games have never been the big bidget super polished games.

In the last 5 years, we have seen vampire survivors raise an entire genre from obscurity to the general public. Lethal company has caused a lot of chaos among friends. BG3 has surprised even the fans (one of those AAA exceptions). Technically, Satisfactory was finally released in 2024. Stray has given us a small but unique experience. Dave the diver is an experience that I still can’t pinpoint the genre of. Half Life Alyx was revolutionary for the VR market. There has been a complete revival of the boomer shooter genre. Doki Doki literature club spawned a new cult following.

These are just some samples that I grabbed from the following search: https://steamdb.info/instantsearch/?range[userScore]=90%3A&refinementList[releaseYear][0]=2025&refinementList[releaseYear][1]=2024&refinementList[releaseYear][2]=2023&refinementList[releaseYear][3]=2022&refinementList[releaseYear][4]=2021&refinementList[releaseYear][5]=2020

You list a bunch of things you don’t like about the current AAA industry and then acknowledge that a lot of people aren’t exclusively playing AAA games.

You’ve completely negated your own arguement whining.

For sure! I definitely feel we’ve drastically slowed down but media is by no means dead. It can be harder to find the gems than before in some regards though.

Hnm that definitely applies to AAA games, although I feel like the power dynamics are just changing. We see more and more indie smash hits, compared to AAA hits imo

Yeah for sure, I’ve been fairly focussed on indies the last 5-7 years and only jump on AAA after it’s released and reviews are in/on special. I believe there’s only so large a human run corporation can be before it turns into an unmanageable mess and quality/focus of the product suffers, and most AAA are well past that point. Indies are the new small-medium sized fun Devs.

Wrt to gaming and other entertainment media, it’s only easy to find the gems now because the dirt has mostly been sifted out of the old stuff. There’s a reason you still hear people talking about Cowboy Bebop, and not Brain Powerd

Then again you also hear people talking about Elfen Lied but not NieA_7, so what do I know?

Yeah that’s also true, tbh I’ve been notorious for not getting into’ anything - I don’t personally follow game news or hype much in the last 10-15 years, I’l wait until my friends pressure me into ‘you have to consume X!’, often well after it’s out and forgotten. I let my friends be the canary in the gold mine, still not sure if that makes me a bad friend… Has helped me avoid amazing TV shows that get cancelled/shit the bed though (still haven’t forgiven GoT producers)
