Sadly, this is as sober as mainstream media gets in the west. I completely agree that the whole idea of a freeze ignores the elephant in the room which is the fact that Russia is winning, and has absolutely no reason to go along with that. Freezing the conflict would basically allow NATO time to rebuild, and then things would revert back to the situation that was in place before the war started.
