Also, as an update, I’ve made the decision to remove the Google Pixel from these charts.

Tensor 4 is a “fine” chip, but there are only so many times I can highlight how performance on Tensor is roughly 3-4 generations behind Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Literally, just to clear up the scale on my bar graphs and make them more readable, but I can do a set of graphs if people REALLY need to see how far behind Tensor is.

Drop a comment if you want Pixels back in the comparison!

@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social the one thing that I’ve noticed is that the Google pixel 9 pro fold has great battery life. But it’s definitely not the most performance oriented chip inside.

On the plus side, Google’s hardware is quite secure and the rooting scene likes it, so I think I’ll keep it. After all, if I can integrate an AdBlock and greenify with root, what’s not to like?

@muppensish@toots.nu I’m not telling people NOT to like their Pixels, but at some point I have to make a choice in coverage.
Google is charging Premium and Ultra tier prices while keeping chip performance in a holding pattern.

When we have hardware conversations, we have to acknowledge the slow charging, smaller batteries, and lagging performance.
After a point tho, it’s just beating a dead horse.

So while your fold has better battery life than previous pixels, the Samsung chip and radio are still dragging it compared to where the rest of the market is going.

So much so, that Google will be using MediaTek for the modem next year. The kind of performance per watt you have now is comparable to where MediaTek was with the Dimensity 9000 in 2021. Maybe poorer.

And next year, with TSMC+MediaTek, you’re going to be in for a bunch of gimmicky reviews of Pixels “WHOA! THE BATTERY IS EVEN BETTER!!!”

@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social well I didn’t defend the device, I was merely sharing my view on it.
Besides, i was going from a Snapdragon 888. So my screen on time was terrible.

Also, graphine OS is only of this folding device, so that’s why I picked it.

@muppensish@toots.nu Oh for sure, and that absolutely would be an upgrade over an 888.
It’s the toughest part about reviewing a product though. I’m not reviewing YOUR individual experience, I have to take this conversation out to what massive corporations are packaging and selling.

I’m not trying to make anyone defensive about what they individually purchased, but I still do need to compare and contrast ALL of these gadgets. I’m criticizing Google, not the people who BUY Googles.

It’s why my Mom is on a OnePlus instead of a Pixel like my Dad and siblings. For HER needs, she runs her OP11 for 3-4 days of really light use, and then plugs it in for 20 minutes, and she’s good for another 3 days.

So when reviewers talk about how much better improved Google is today, it’s an incomplete account based on comparing it to older pixels, but Pixels are popular now (with Google spending more on marketing), so I dont see a lot of folks showing how other brands have offered that battery life experience for a while now.

@muppensish@toots.nu Your experience there “I wanted better battery life on a foldable than an 888 and I want to use Graphene” is hyper specific, and a Pixel likely tackles that better than any other options.

I’m not reviewing graphene though, so I still need to point out how Google is in a holding pattern thanks to their relationship with Samsung.

What’s frustrating about the foldable market, the cost of a hinge is still so significant, that it still doesn’t make sense to make a mid-range book style foldable.

Then you’d have even better battery life for your needs at a more accessible price.

We can’t get there though if we just shrug off performance differences on ultra priced devices. People need to understand a bit more like they do with car engines, that some engines make a car go faster, but they burn more fuel doing that.

Even tech enthusiasts are a bit under-educated about chips and performance, given the comments and replies I get on my videos, so I keep publishing bar graphs…

@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social oh. Just for some fune statistics, I don’t know how it compares to other devices, but I currently get 2 and a half days worth of usage per charge.

I don’t do much more than look at charts and use discord, so my usage is less demanding.
