2. He’s convinced that an apocalyptic end to the USA as we know it is coming any day now.

Seems like he’s contributing to the cause of the apocalypse he is afraid of.

My theory on why he’s doing that is since he sees it as inevitable he’d rather have it happen on his terms/under his control.

Yep. He wants to be on the winning team. He’s dancing to fascism now. If somehow the tide changes in his lifetime expect him to come out as a secret socialist who knows the real agenda.
