Well, you might’ve heard foods with carbohydrates are sometimes referred to by the abbreviation “carbs". If you know carbs are food, it’s obvious the word starting in “carb-” is the edible one.

Nitrate = nitrogen + oxygen
Phosphate = phosphorus + oxygen
