i wonder if it’s actually possible to install linux on a machine without a CPU

These days, the CPU probably runs Linux on itself.

Storage drive control boards are basically small computers in their own right, now.

Linux is a bit heavy for embedded stuff.

Intel’s ME for an example, uses Minix.
