So i have really been contemplating rooting my Pixel to gain more control over the android OS. I know this comes with risks and if your not carefully one can brick their phone.

I have already been able to decentralize myself from googles stock Android OS with out root by side loading Graphene OS on to my device which has worked out great.

Just wanted to get some input on whether it’s worth the hassle to reflash a factory android is by google just to root the phone, then proceed with installing another non Google android os once again.

Input from anyone with more knowledge than mW regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

No different than rooting any other phone.

I root to do specific things - those are my benefits of rooting a phone: Real (local) backups using tools like NeoBackup, which can easily restore apps and data. Full file system access so tools like Syncthing can write to external storage (not a concern on Pixel since it doesn’t have external storage). Ability to hibernate any app, including system apps that love to relaunch for no good reason. On that note, ability to fully manage broadcast receivers and prevent any app from launching other than when you want it to run.

If there’s not something for which you specifically need root, then you really have no reason to root.

Also, no reason to reflash a factory rom, you can root Graphene just like any other.

Ok thanks for the input it is greatly appreciated. At the moment I don’t have any specific reason for wanting to root my device. But I at the very least wanted to have the ability to control when apps launch and when they don’t as well as trying to gain access to system files that can be cleared without ruining the OS to properly sanitize the devices memory…
