[and I lied, not ex-mac as such, I have a few macs round the house, and built my Linux machine to run games on steam/lutris, around a spare gfx card that came out of my classic Mac pro5,1]

Ash separators and flue gas desulphurisation. That keeps the stack from having grey/brown or yellow fumes, which would contain the ash as solids to drop out or the sulphur dioxide that contributes to acid rain. Cooling towers are of course only water vapour, so as long as the visible emission of the central thin stack on a coal power station is white, it’s running clean.

And then fitted flue gas desulphurisation equipment to clean up the emissions to burn the cheap brown coal that had the higher sulphur content, to make the emissions equivalent to the expensive Welsh stuff.
