Gamechanger for me was automation with home assistant. I attached sensors everywhere and wrote scripts that nag me with notifications on my phone. For example I have a smart wall plug where the washer is attached to. If the power draw first rises over a threshold it means, that I started the washer. If it goes below a theeshold that means it’s finished and it sends a notification. To make sure I don’t ignore it, I attached a door/window sensor to the washer’s door. So it reminds me every 5 minutes until I open that fucking door.

And I tried to identify as many situations like these as possible so it takes care of reminding me. It’s not perfect and many things are not feasible to automate. But it helps me a lot!

I’m not saying that rewriting he backend is a good choice, but for me specifically, I’d like Lemmy to be written in Java. Why? I’m a Java software engineer for nearly 7 years now and I’d like to contribute. Yes, I could learn Rust, like I did learn Go, C, C++ and other languages during my cs studies. But I really don’t have the free time and motivation to do that after I already worked 8-10 hours at my computer. If I could use my existing Java knowledge to quickly fix some small bugs or whatever, I’d love to do that. But the hurdle to learn a new language (including other paradigms and best practices) just to contribute to this one project is just too high for me.

I’m using Kagi for quite some time now and it’s awesome. But recently I was using a different machine and did not have my login credentials at hand so I used Google and holy shit I didn’t remember Google giving such aweful results. I was not able to find what I was looking for. Then searched the same thing on my phone through Kagi and the solution was in the first three results. So yes I also feel that Google search is getting worse.

Just because violet light triggers both red and blue receptors in our eyes, that doesn’t mean there is only discrete red and blue light hitting them. It’s just that light with 380nm to 450nm wavelength triggers both typed of receptors. So there is violet light.

I think that analogy is a little off. You can blame Google for showing you bad search results, because the monetary value of a result is much more interesting for Google than showing the actual best result for the query. But I still get your point though.

I tried and I do not like it. I’m pretty lean but my thighs still rub against each other. This means I quickly get sore spots on the insides of my thighs when wearing a kilt. Especially in warm weather.

There’s an estimation done in Germany every year. And the result is always that only around 4% of the the people on welfare abuse it. Compared to the damage that is done to the state by clever tax evasion of super rich people, these are peanuts. But going after these 4% of welfare abusers is of course easier so that’s why they put a lot effort into it.

Yes. I know a bank where you’re trading fees are lower or even zero, depending on the size of your share portfolio.
