It’s been a busy week, but I finally got a chance to read Defiant. There’s a lot crammed into the book, and most of it is fun.

• Personally I’m tired of Sisko and Worf’s bickering at this point. Their fallout seemed pretty flimsy when it happened, and here Worf’s dragging up a bunch of old problems from their time together on DS9 did not work for me.

• Similarly Tom and B’Elanna’s bickering didn’t really move the needle.

• I did like Sela, Doctor Crusher, and the Defiant’s unnamed Orion drug dealer/medic rushing to save Martok that’s good stuff.

• The highlight of the issue is definitely the Data Lore interactions. I especially liked their conversation as they run through the streets of Qo’noS incapacitating Red Path followers without even pausing. Data’s always had the potential to be so much scarier than he is, and it worked really well here.

My apologies that this one’s going up late, even by my standards. Between work, social obligations, and my internet going out during the time I normally have to write these, I wasn’t able to get it up when I’d like. Still, it is (barely) before the next episode drops, so there’s that.

Who said you can’t critique Disco?

This is about a very specific, very silly objection, levelled by people who have found themselves indoctrinated into a mode of thinking that alienates them from the people around them, because of a manufactured fear preying upon alienation many of us experience in our modern world.

I’ve had plenty of objections to aspects of Disco, especially during season two, but scattered throughout the series, and no one has ever called me a bigot for my hot takes. If you’re presenting your critiques in such a way that people are assuming you’re bigoted, perhaps you should reevaluate how you’re constructing your criticism.

Man, I love the bit where Archer is already force feeding Trip a plate of shit for giving a person kept in sexual slavery a glimpse of a better life, and to add insult to injury he’s all, “And on top of it all, now the Vissian couple will have to wait to be able to conceive.”

Archer is the worst captain.

I’m not on Reddit, I don’t know how the fandom is, but on Reddit I’d say “now queue the down votes and bans” because new trek fans there apparently don’t like people who remember what star trek was.

Because that’s what the artist decided to draw. Maybe Kira has it for someone she knows who identifies as a lesbian. Maybe she was just getting into the spirit of things and grabbed the first flag she saw.

Obviously in canon Kira only expresses interest in dudes with the personalities of dry toast, but mirror Kira is a bit more open. It’s not entirely clear if sexual orientation is 1:1 across universes, so who’s to say if prime Kira experiences same sex attraction or not?

Odo definitely identifies as male.

And yes.

My excitement at having Paul Giamatti in Trek is significantly tempered by the idea that he’s going to be the season villain for “Starfleet Academy”. Unless he’s going to be the hard ass dean of the Academy that doesn’t want to put up Tilly’s students putting Orion pheromones in the environmental system, and kidnapping the Klingon Military Academy’s targ mascot before the big game, I’m not interested in a villain.

You don’t have to play the good guys for the system to work, the same system is used for Dune - Adventures in the Imperium, and that’s a setting about as morally grey as it gets. Even with Star Trek Adventures, there is the Klingon Core Rulebook if you want to be a bit more rowdy than your typical Starfleet officers. The Operations Division sourcebook has suggestions for playing as Section 31 as well.
