Wooo! Finally got my account working and left my very active, high-karma, 7 year old account where I was active as a freelance bot bounty hunter, so I’m also taking my freelance bot-squashing away.

I was in a couple of subs* there for like a week after Apollo died because of the learning curve, and now I’m 100% Lemmy and haven’t even checked reddit for a week.

I was actually a customer in addition to a user and cancelled my premium account on Reddit too. As a software UXD and old-school developer on everything from Acorn, Commodore, Intellivision, Basic, but of assembly, VB, Perl, C versions through ++ and #, all the horrid Java incarnations, sql/oracle, and now web, enterprise, unity, and enough deep dives into Reddit’s GitHub to learn its a clusterfuck in there…

I’m done with them. This isn’t something you push a fix for. It’s something you fire your entire executive team over or just give up and let the bots have it. That’s where they are, I think.

I only care about aliens if they’re going to use their tech to fix our climate. Otherwise they can fuck off.

They spelled ‘eat’ wrong.

People think I’m crazy for apologising to my roomba when I trip on it and for saying please and thank you to Alexa and Siri, but I won’t be surprised at all when the robots rise up, considering how our scientists are treating them. I’ll have a track record of being nice, and that has to count for something, right?

What do actual doctors who have studied for years know?!? My grandad said rub some dirt in it. Sure, my niece died of e-coli, but it wasn’t the rare pork, she just didn’t pray hard enough.

Food for thought, though: we thought the same thing about all other animals until only a couple of decades ago, and are still struggling over the topic.

I’ve got this weird disease where my body can’t process fruits or veg, only meat, rice, pasta, and dairy.

I’m so excited for sustainable, lab-grown meat, I can’t even tell you. Living on rice and pasta alone sucks (even with dietary supplements), so I can’t ditch animal products.

They keep promising it, but every related headline is this bullshit. Hey corporate meat scientists: stop trying to make animal farming a thing in the future and start growing cloned steaks, please.

Pall Malls were marketed to pregnant women for stress control by people who played doctors on television as late as the early 1980s. You could even smoke in your hospital room.

We’ve come a long way, baby.

I never stopped wearing masks since the beginning, and get boosted every time it’s available.

I’ve always taken Covid seriously, same as the flu for which we get yearly boosters.

I’ll always be angry at antivaxxers that this thing that could have been contained like SARS was turned globally endemic because morons refuse to live in reality, so I’ll probably have to mask for the rest of my life (I have autoimmune issues that don’t play nice with Covid and I’d likely die very, very horribly, slowly and painfully drowning alone in an isolation room).

So yeah, I won’t forget who’s fault this is.

Minor niggle: the ‘deep fried effect’ isn’t because jpg throws away information every time, it’s because the compression algorithm averages pixel boundaries, and that averaging multiplies with each compression pass.

It can actually bloat the size of the file by adding information – adding data to previously null pixels, whereas png would keep them clean.

e: it achieves this through pixel averaging (fuzzing), which is why you’ll see grey artefacts bleeding into the pixels around line art. This is magnified with each compression.
