For all we know, half the users over there (re)posting content could be bots that continue indefinitely, reposting more and more popular content from other sites like TikTok with more bots leaving comments that they stole from other posts. Reddit could in theory continue operating even with zero actual users.
Earlier roadmaps set a goal of reaching 100TB by the end of the decade.
Linux ISOs here I come!
It’ll be interesting to see how reliable these things are. That’s a lot of data to store in one place and RAID rebuild times will be long.
How can they prove you downloaded something if all they can see is an IP address? For all you know you accidently left your wifi open and some ruffian driving by downloaded the file.
Edit: guess I could have read the link first.
The German Federal Supreme Court decided that every person who owns an internet connection is under an obligation to ensure that it is secured.
Without port forwarding, you can’t make incoming connections meaning you won’t be seeding your files back to anyone and it also limits outgoing connections which means downloads will be slower and may fail all together on torrents with few seeders.
Some people run without it using public trackers since you can just hit and run without seeding the files, but this would get you quickly banned on private trackers. It also goes against the principles of p2p if you’re never seeding your files back to anyone.
I’ve been doing it for 20 years and have never been caught. I’ve never even heard of i2p until here just a couple of weeks ago. The fact that certain people are pushing it so hard and referring to standard methods in such a derogatory way makes me highly skeptical of trying it out.
And just because there is some new method available doesn’t mean you’re retaining your privacy there either. I have a VPN to hide my IP and as far as I’m concerned that’s enough ‘privacy’ to avoid any issues.
What’s the worst that’ll happen, my ISP sends me a letter telling me to knock it off? You’re acting like this is some sort of top secret black ops mission in need of complete secrecy.
